Eyes flicking over. The soft hum of speculation rising like static. People expected me to hide. Instead, I stood under the chandelier light, shoulders squared, hands loose in my pockets.

Across the room, Lauren froze. She wore a black dress that probably cost more than my monthly mortgage. Perfect hair. Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile. Except the smile cracked the second she saw me. Brad stood beside her, jaw tightening, his posture sliding from confident to cornered in the span of two seconds. Jenna hovered close, clutching her wine glass like it was the only solid thing in the room.

A beautiful little triangle of nervousness. I didn't walk toward them. That wasn't the game tonight. Instead, I let the room work for me.

Margaret Foster, president of the foundation, respected and sharp, spotted me and glided over with practiced warmth. "Ethan, I'm so glad you came. How are you holding up?" I gave her the kind of answer that doesn't accuse, doesn't hide, just lands.

"I'm doing all right," I said. "The girls and I are settling into a rhythm. Lauren's staying with Jenna for now, sorting things out. Brad's been around there a lot."

"I'm just keeping things stable at home." Every word technically true. No embellishments. No venom.

Margaret's expression shifted. Sympathy mixed with subtle, controlled shock. She squeezed my arm gently and drifted away. Carrying the information with her like a worker bee heading back to the hive.

Within minutes, I watched the ripple effect spread. People weren't whispering about me anymore. They were whispering about them. About the living arrangement.

The timing. The beach. The optics. In Milford, optics matter almost as much as morality.

Brad noticed first. His shoulders compressed. His fingers twitched against his glass. He couldn't fight what he couldn't see.

Lauren tried to recover her poise. Jenna tried to look like she wasn't unraveling. But the conversations around them had already changed shape, tone, direction. That's the thing about truth.

Once it circulates, you can't stuff it back into the bottle. An hour in, Jenna cornered me. Literally cornered me. Grabbed my arm outside the main ballroom and pulled me into a hallway lit by a single bulb and the cheap sconces the club refused to replace.

Her mascara had smudged. She didn't notice. "What are you doing?" she hissed. "You're destroying people's lives."

I didn't raise my voice. Didn't lean in. Just stood straight. "No," I said.

"I'm telling the truth. If the truth destroys anything, that's not my problem." She shook her head, panicked. "You're twisting things."

I cut her off. "Tuesday nights. Brad's car. Your driveway." Her mouth fell open just enough to betray her.
