I drove my stepmom to the hotel. She tossed me the key. "There's only one bed." The rain had been falling for nearly 3 hours. I was driving through a quiet mountain road, gripping the steering wheel while my stepmom, Linda, stared silently out the passenger window.

We had been on the road since morning. My father had asked me to drive Linda to a hotel near the airport because her flight had been canceled and she needed to stay overnight. Neither of us expected the night to become unforgettable. Suddenly, Linda pointed toward a small hotel glowing through the rain. "Pull over," she said.

I parked. She grabbed her suitcase, rushed inside, and disappeared behind the reception desk. A few minutes later, she came back holding a small key card. She tossed it toward me. I caught it.

Then she said four words that made me freeze. "There's only one bed." I stared at her. "What?" Linda sighed.

"They're completely booked. The storm caused dozens of flight cancellations." She looked exhausted. "Don't worry. I'm not asking you to share the bed.

You can take the bed." "I'll sleep in the chair." I immediately shook my head. "No. You're older and you've been traveling all day.

I'll take the chair." She smiled faintly. "You've always been stubborn." "And you've always been impossible to argue with." For the first time that evening, she laughed.

We went upstairs. The room was small but clean. There was indeed only one bed, one chair, and a tiny table beside the window. Linda placed her suitcase down. Then she noticed something strange.

A large envelope was lying on the table. Her name was written on it: Linda Harper. She stopped breathing. "What's wrong?" I asked.

She slowly picked up the envelope. "I don't know." Inside was a photograph. It showed my father standing outside an old house. Linda stared at it for several seconds.

Then she whispered, "This house." "What about it?" She turned toward me. "This is the house where I met your father." I was confused.

"Why would someone send you a picture of it?" There was another piece of paper inside. Only one sentence was written: "You deserve to know what really happened 20 years ago." Linda's hands began shaking. She sat on the edge of the bed.

"My husband never told you this story, did he?" "No." She looked toward the window. "Because I never wanted you involved." Linda explained that 20 years earlier, before she married my father, she had worked at a small company.

My father had been starting his first business. One night, an important company document disappeared. Everyone blamed Linda. She lost her job. But my father believed she was innocent.

He spent months trying to prove it. Eventually, the real culprit was discovered. Linda had been telling the truth. But something else happened during that investigation. Someone had stolen money from the company.

And my father had taken the blame to protect another employee. I couldn't believe it. "My dad did that?" Linda nodded. "He sacrificed reputation for someone he cared about."

"Who?" She didn't answer. Instead, she looked at the photograph again. Then there was a knock at the hotel door. Three slow knocks.
