That felt lucky.

The speaker was broken, the folding table bent, food contaminated, and several framed family photographs had fallen when Dana swung toward the table.

Police documented everything.

Darius received a call from the police chief twenty minutes later.

“I heard there was a weapon.”

“Dana Whitcomb had a baseball bat. Nobody else.”

“Do you need anything?”

“A normal investigation.”

The chief paused.

“Understood.”

“And preserve the 911 audio.”

“Already flagged.”

That recording became the center of the case.

Not because Dana confessed to anything.

Because the timing exposed the story she was constructing.

She called at 1:41 p.m.

At that exact time, Renee’s backyard recording showed Darius calmly turning ribs on the grill.

Dana told the dispatcher:

“There is a large unauthorized gathering at Briar Glen. One of the men is threatening people with a metal object. He is refusing to leave common property.”

The dispatcher asked whether Darius had threatened her directly.

Dana claimed he had said:

“You’ll regret interfering.”

He never said it.

No camera captured it.

No witness remembered it.

The dispatcher asked whether anyone had weapons.

Dana replied:

“He has something metal in his hand. I think it could be a weapon.”

At 1:42, Dana’s own doorbell camera showed her entering her garage and retrieving the baseball bat.

At 1:43, she walked toward Renee’s property.

At 1:44, she entered the backyard.

She created the emergency report first.

Then carried the real weapon into the scene.

Detective Alana Brooks interviewed Darius the next morning.

She was patient and methodical.

“Did Ms. Whitcomb know your city position before Saturday?”

“I don’t know.”

“Had you met?”

“No.”

“Any disputes between the city and the HOA?”

That question led somewhere unexpected.

Briar Glen had several ordinary matters pending with municipal staff—stormwater maintenance, a retaining-wall permit, complaints about a private gate crossing a public easement, and a proposed clubhouse expansion.

The clubhouse project mattered.

Briar Glen wanted to expand its event space, commercial kitchen, and terrace so the HOA could rent the facility for weddings and corporate functions.

The problem was a public drainage easement.

The city engineering department said the proposed permanent construction could not cross it.

Darius had not made the engineering decision.

His name appeared on the final administrative letter because correspondence from his office carried his signature block.

The redesign would cost Briar Glen around forty-three thousand dollars and reduce the event hall’s capacity.

Brooks asked:

“Could Dana have blamed you?”

“Possibly.”

“How much authority did you personally have over the determination?”

“None beyond normal administrative oversight. Engineering applied an existing ordinance.”

Darius leaned forward.

“Be careful with that theory. We have no evidence she recognized me from the letter.”

Brooks looked at him.

“You always tell investigators not to overstate their own case?”

“Occupational habit.”

She almost smiled.

Then she placed a printed sheet in front of him.

Darius’s official biography.

His photograph.

His title.

The page had been printed two days before the reunion.

Darius went quiet.

Brooks asked:

“Still think she didn’t know who you were?”

He studied the page.

“I think you should ask why she printed it.”

That was when the story changed.

Dana had known exactly who he was.

The real question became why she arrived pretending he was a dangerous stranger.

Investigators checked Darius’s official calendar and correspondence from the previous week.

Dana had requested no meeting.
