“I spent a long time telling myself that what happened at the King family gathering began when Mr. King challenged me.”

Darius was not there.

Renee was.

Dana continued.

“It began earlier than that.”

She looked toward the board.

“I had made the clubhouse decision personal.”

“The city said no to something I wanted, and I decided the person whose name appeared on the letter was responsible.”

She swallowed.

“I also believed that being president meant I had to demonstrate authority whenever anyone resisted me.”

A few homeowners shifted.

Dana’s voice remained steady.

“I was wrong.”

Nobody applauded.

That was appropriate.

She was not giving a redemption speech.

She was acknowledging damage.

“I called police with information I had not verified.”

“That created a danger I did not appreciate until later.”

She looked toward Renee.

“I am sorry.”

Renee did not smile.

She did not offer forgiveness.

She simply nodded once.

Dana returned to her seat.

Howard waited several seconds before continuing the meeting.

That was enough.

The Clubhouse

Briar Glen eventually redesigned the clubhouse expansion.

Smaller event room.

Different terrace.

Drainage easement untouched.

The project cost more than the original plan because delays and design revisions had increased construction prices, but the building opened eighteen months later without any special intervention from the city manager.

Darius had remained recused until Dana’s criminal case ended.

When he resumed normal administrative responsibilities, the clubhouse permits were already complete.

The city engineering department signed off on the final drainage design.

Howard invited Darius to the opening.

Darius declined.

Renee went.

Mostly because she wanted to see it.

When she returned, she called him.

“You know what’s funny?”

“What?”

“The smaller event room is still huge.”

Darius laughed.

“That tends to happen when people fight over hypothetical losses.”

“They could’ve built it this way from the beginning.”

“Yes.”

“And avoided all of this.”

“No.”

Renee paused.

“Why not?”

“Because the clubhouse wasn’t what caused all of this.”

He was right.

The project was only the spark.

The deeper problem was Dana’s belief that disagreement diminished her authority.

If it had not been the clubhouse, eventually it would have been something else.

A parking dispute.

A landscaping letter.

Another party.

Another homeowner willing to ask:

Where does the rule actually say that?

The Third Reunion

One year after Dana walked into Renee’s backyard with the bat, the King family held another reunion.

This time more than forty relatives came.

Nobody asked the HOA for permission.

They did not need to.

Howard helped arrange temporary overflow parking because several older relatives could not walk far.

That was the entirety of the HOA’s involvement.

Loretta arrived first.

At eighty-two, she now delegated almost all food preparation while continuing to claim every dish had been made personally by her.

Renee knew better.

Nobody challenged her.

Ava had grown nearly three inches and hated when anybody mentioned the video she had recorded.
