She thought about what she had found on the other side of paying it. She got up, washed the coffee cups Victoria had not used, put them back on the shelf, and went to press her dress for dinner at the Carter Ranch on Sunday. She was still a practical woman. She was also, she thought, smoothing the fabric under her hands, something she had not been this time last year or the year before, or any of the years before that. She was a woman who had stopped calculating herself out of the center of her own life, who had stopped letting the fear of what things cost talk her out of the things worth paying for.

She was a woman who had decided. And she pressed the dress carefully, the way she did everything, with full attention and without shortcuts. And she hung it on the hook behind her door, and she went to bed early because Sunday was coming, and she intended to be ready for it. Sunday dinner at the Carter Ranch became a fixed point in the turning of the weeks. Not officially, no one declared it.

It simply became true the way most real things became true gradually without announcement until the day Amelia realized she had been doing it for six consecutive Sundays and that the absence of it would have felt like a missing step on a familiar staircase. Walter set a place for her without being asked by the third week. Hector, who had initially regarded her arrival with the cautious neutrality of a man who had worked far harder long enough to know that neutrality was the safest position when the boss was in a complicated mood, had by the fifth week started leaving her coffee on the desk in the study without being asked because she always wanted coffee when she sat down with the books and he had noted this and acted on it. These were small things. They were also, she understood, the way acceptance worked in households run by men who found sentiment difficult, not through a declarations, but through the quiet accommodation of a person's presence into the existing order of things.

She was becoming, in the particular language of the Carter Ranch, a fact. She found she liked being a fact. It was, she thought, considerably better than being a question. Nathaniel asked her to marry him on a Tuesday morning in November, which was both the most and least surprising thing he had ever done. The most surprising because she had been expecting it on a Sunday at the ranch with Walter's apparent blessing already somewhat established the formal occasion, the planned moment.

The least surprising because it was Nathaniel and Nathaniel did things when he decided to do them, not when the occasion suggested he should. She was at the front desk at Caldwells. He came in the front door at half 8, which was earlier than he usually came. And he walked directly to the desk and he said without preamble, without preparation, "Amelia, will you marry me?" Not a question exactly, or rather a question said with such complete conviction about the answer that the grammatical mark seemed beside the point. She looked up from the ledger.

He was standing at the desk with his hat in his hands and his expression was the most unguarded she had ever seen it, not nervous exactly, but open in a way that cost him something. The careful composure he usually maintained set aside completely, everything underneath it visible. Yes, she said. He let out a breath. Good, he said.

That's good. She looked at him. You were uncertain. I was not uncertain about the question, he said. I was uncertain about the morning.

I thought about Sunday at the ranch. I thought about somewhere more arranged. And I woke up this morning, he said, and I thought I know her answer. And I thought, why am I waiting for the arranged version of a thing that's already true? She held his gaze.
