Why? No reason. He says too quickly. I'll be at that meeting. Count on it.

He hangs up before Meg can ask anything else. Gruff to the last word. She doesn't know about the $2 or the brother or the empty chair. She just knows Earl said yes and that's enough for now. Then Dorothy.

Then the retired teachers who meet every Wednesday without fail. When me calls Dorothy, the older woman is quiet for a long moment. That girl sat with me once, Dorothy finally says. Just to talk about a book. Nobody's done that since my husband passed.

Not once. I'll be there, she says. Whatever time you need me. Tell that sweet girl I'm not forgetting what she did for me. I don't know exactly what's happening, she tells each of them honestly.

But I know this diner's being run out of town for the wrong reasons. If you're willing to show up to that council meeting, it might matter. One by one, they say yes. Some out of loyalty, some out of stubbornness, most out of something harder to name, a feeling that enough is enough. By Thursday, Meg has a list of nearly 30 names willing to attend.

She doesn't tell Grant's family. She doesn't tell anyone who might warn them. She just keeps the list folded in her apron pocket, growing longer by the day. Rosie finds the list by accident on Friday morning, tucked behind the register. She unfolds it slowly, reading name after familiar name.

By the time she reaches the bottom, her eyes are full. She finds Meg in the kitchen, List still in hand, voice unsteady. "You did this? All of it? I couldn't just sit here and watch it happen.

" Meg says a little defensive. "I didn't think you'd mind. " Rosie pulls her into a hug before Meg can say anything else. "I don't mind, " she says. "I don't know how to thank you.

" "You don't have to, " Meg says, muffled against her shoulder. "This town's worth fighting for. Even the parts of it that scare me. " Rosie holds on to her a moment longer than she means to. Some debts, she thinks, you never quite finish repaying.

You just try every day to be worth them. Ryan Foster finds himself avoiding Grant's calls for the first time in years. He drives past the diner twice one evening, engine idling, never going in. Something in him wants to say what he saw. Something in him is terrified, too.

He knows what happens to people in this town who cross the Whitmores. He's watched it happen before to people who used to be his friends. On the third night, Grant finds him anyway, waiting outside his apartment. "You've been quiet, " Grant says, leaning against Ryan's truck. "Been busy, " Ryan says, not meeting his eyes.

"That deputy come talk to you yet? " "No, good. Keep it that way. " Grant's voice stays light, almost friendly. "You saw me by that register?
