She saw the way he treated the animals with a gentle hand that belied the violence of his past. She noticed that he never touched her, not even by accident. He moved around her with a careful, deliberate grace, respecting the space between them as if it were holy ground. It confused her, and slowly, it began to frustrate her. She found herself watching his hands as he mended a bridle.

She found herself wondering what it would feel like if he held her not to keep her warm, but because he wanted to. The tenderness growing in her was reluctant. It fought against her grief and her pride, but it was there, green and stubborn as a desert weed. One evening, the light was failing, painting the sky in violet and blood. They were out by the north pasture, fixing a section of fence that the cattle had pushed over.

"Hold this post," Elias said, straining to keep the heavy cedar log upright. Naya stepped in, bracing her shoulder against the wood. "I have it." Elias hammered the wire home, the metal ringing in the quiet air. "That should hold."

He stepped back, wiping sweat from his forehead. Naya stepped back, too, but her heel caught in the hidden depression of a gopher hole. She tipped backward, a small cry escaping her lips. Elias moved on instinct. He lunged forward, his arm sweeping out.

He caught her around the waist, pulling her hard against him to keep her from falling. The impact knocked the wind out of both of them. Naya's hands clutched his shirt. Elias's arm was tight around her back, his other hand gripping her upper arm. They froze.

Her face was inches from his. He could see the gold flecks in her dark eyes. He could smell the sage and dust in her hair. He could feel the rapid beat of her heart against his chest, or maybe it was his own. The moment stretched, a heartbeat, two, three.

The boundary they had drawn was gone. The distance was erased. The air between them crackled with a sudden, intense electricity. It was fear, yes, but beneath the fear was a hunger so sharp it stole Elias's breath. He wanted to kiss her.

The desire hit him like a physical blow. He wanted to bury his face in her neck and forget everything else. Naya looked at his lips. Her breath hitched. Her fingers tightened on his shirt, pulling him a fraction of an inch closer.

Then, the reality of who they were crashed back in. Elias stepped back as if he had been burned. He released her, his hands retreating to his sides. "I I am sorry," he stammered, his voice rough. "You were falling."

Naya smoothed her dress, her face flushed, her eyes wide and startled. "Yes," she said breathlessly. "Thank you." She refused to look at him. The air was thick with the ghost of what had almost happened.

"We should go back," Elias said, turning toward the horses. His movements jerky and uncoordinated. "It is getting dark." "Yes," Naya repeated. They rode back to the cabin without speaking, but the silence was no longer empty.
