And Richard Grant would be sitting across the table, still carrying the confidence of a man whose name hung on buildings. Maya closed her fingers around the token for the first time since the reception. She wasn't wondering whether anyone would believe her. Tomorrow's question was different. What would happen when the truth became too public, too precise, and too well documented for money to make it disappear?

At 8.52 the next morning, Maya Brooks sat outside Hawthorne University's disciplinary room with both hands folded in her lap. The hallway smelled faintly of furniture polish and coffee. Oak paneled doors lined one side. Tall windows on the other looked out across a wet Richmond campus where last night's rain still clung to the branches of bare-limbed trees and glistened on the stone walkways. Maya wore a simple navy blouse, black slacks, and the brass transit token beneath her collar.

No catering uniform. No championship medals. Nothing that asked anyone in the building to see her as more than she was, Monica sat beside her. David Carter stood near the windows holding a thick folder against his chest. Ethan and Linda waited farther down the hall.

Walter had told Maya that morning he needed to make one stop before the hearing. He hadn't explained, for once she hadn't asked. At exactly 9, Dean Susan Miller opened the door. Let's begin. The disciplinary room was smaller than Maya expected.

Long oak table, 12 chairs, a university seal mounted on the wall, a flat screen monitor stood at one end, dark for now. Richard Grant sat across from Maya beside Tyler and an attorney in a charcoal suit. Richard looked composed. Tyler did not. He avoided Maya's eyes.

Susan took the chair at the head of the table. Two faculty panel members sat beside her. David remained near the back until called. Susan spoke first. This hearing concerns the physical confrontation at the founder's reception and subsequent evidence relevant to that incident.

Our purpose is to establish facts and determine appropriate university action. Richard's attorney leaned forward. Before we begin, we want the record to reflect that Miss Brooks has extensive advanced combat training. Maya felt Monica stiffen beside her. The attorney continued.

She is not an ordinary untrained student who reacted instinctively. She is a former Krav Maga champion with years of competitive experience. Richard folded his hands. There it was again. The same strategy turned Maya's discipline into danger.

Susan looked at Maya. Do you dispute that? No. How long did you train? Seven years. Did you compete?

Yes, at a high level. Richard's attorney nodded as though every answer helped him. So when you took physical control of Mr. Grant, you understood precisely what you were doing. Maya met his eyes. Yes, and you understood you could cause injury.

Yes. Tyler glanced up. For the first time that morning, Richard almost smiled. The attorney leaned back. No further question on that point.

Susan remained still. Actually, she said, I have one. She looked at Maya. Did you intend to injure Mr. Grant? No. Did you strike him?

No, kick him? No. Continue restraining him once he released your hair. No, Richard's attorney opened his mouth. Susan raised a hand. We're going to review the evidence now.

The screen came on. Jason's video began. At first, the room heard ordinary reception noise, music, conversation, glasses. Then Tyler's voice. Louder than everything around it.
