"A typed entry. Monday, 10:18 a.m. caller. Office of Richard Grant. Maya's eyes stopped there, Karen continued. The caller requested that what they described as a sensitive student matter involving Mr. Grant's son be handled with appropriate discretion.

Walter leaned forward slightly. Maya read the line again. Before my second conduct warning. Yes. How long before?

3 days. Maya looked at Dean Bennett. The dean's face was tight, not defensive, ashamed. Karen said, "We also reviewed the internal note attached to the call." She slid over another page.

The note was short. Long-standing donor relationship. Avoid unnecessary escalation. Coordinate before formal action. Maya did not speak.

She did not need to. For weeks, she had wondered whether the walls around Tyler were real or only something everyone imagined because his father had money. Now the walls had paperwork. Walter looked toward the window. "Anything older?"

Karen nodded. "That is where this becomes larger than your case." She opened the third folder. Three names, three adult students, three separate academic years. One had withdrawn, one had accepted a quiet disciplinary agreement.

One had lost scholarship standing for a semester after a complaint that was later reduced. Each incident involved Tyler or members of his immediate social circle. Each file contained some version of the same phrase handled discreetly. Maya felt the anger come back. Not like the courtyard.

This was different. The courtyard had been humiliating. This was architecture. A system of people using soft language to make hard consequences disappear from view. Walter spoke first.

Who approved those decisions? Karen looked at Dean Bennett. Different people, same pressure. That's what we're investigating. Door opened before anyone could say more.

A man in a dark overcoat stepped inside without waiting to be invited. Richard Grant, 56, tall, silver at the temples, the kind of man who carried himself as if every room had already agreed with him. Tyler looked like him. That was Maya's first thought. Not in the face, in the certainty.

Richard glanced at Maya, then Walter, then Karen. What is this? Dean Bennett stood. Mr. Grant, this meeting is not scheduled. My son has been suspended based on a misunderstanding.

Karen closed one folder. But your son has been suspended pending formal review based on documented conduct. Richard looked at her. And you are independent investigator for the board. Something in his posture changed.

Small, but Maya saw it. He had expected administrators, people who knew the donation totals, not someone whose paycheck came from somewhere else. Richard turned back to Dean Bennett. I want this handled privately. Karen's pen moved.

Walter noticed. So did Maya, Richard continued. My family has supported this institution for over 15 years. Nobody answered. We funded half the athletic center.
