Every head turned. She clicked into the incident management system. A conduct complaint tied to Miz. Brooks was submitted today at 5:41 p.m. Maya looked up. The courtyard confrontation had begun after 6, Lisa continued.

It describes an altercation outside the Grant Athletic Center. Walter leaned forward. What does it say? Lisa read from the screen. That Ms. Brooks became physically aggressive after being confronted by another student and attempted to force him to the ground.

Daniel's eyes narrowed. Maya felt the room tilt. What time was it filed? She asked. 41.

Maya looked through the glass wall toward the courtyard clock mounted near the entrance. The incident had not happened yet. Tyler's face went blank. Walter's voice dropped. You filed a report describing something before it occurred.

T said nothing. Lisa scrolled. It's from Tyler Grant's student account. Nobody spoke. Daniel looked at Maya.

Maya looked at Tyler. For weeks, he'd been trying to build a record around her. Now he'd finally built the wrong one. The complaint wasn't just false. It was premature.

A script submitted before the scene. Walt leaned back slowly. "Well," he said. That changes things. Maya looked toward the blue camera light still blinking outside.

The detail Tyler had ignored. The system he thought belonged to him. The record he believed he could control. Now all of it pointed in one direction. But Maya knew this still wasn't the whole truth.

Tyler had known about her scholarship. He had known about her martial arts training. He had known exactly what kind of accusation would hurt her most, and people with his kind of confidence rarely built a trap alone. The question had changed again, not whether Tyler planned it. That was now undeniable.

The question was, who had helped him know where to aim? The answer arrived the next morning in a place Maya had come to distrust. An office with clean glass walls, soft carpet, expensive silence. At 9:04, Dean Bennett asked Mia to return to administration. This time, Tyler was not there.

Neither was Daniel. Walter sat near the window with his canvas jacket folded across his lap and beside him was a woman Maya had never met before. She introduced herself as Karen Doyle, 53, an independent investigator hired by Caldwell's board overnight. That alone told Maya how badly the ground had shifted. Universities did not hire outside investigators because they felt calm.

Karen had three folders open in front of her. One held security stills from the courtyard. One contained Tyler's pre-written complaint. The third was thinner. That was the one she touched first.

"M Brooks," she said. "We found something in the dean's office call log." Maya sat across from her. "What?" Karen turned the page around.

"A typed entry. Monday, 10:18 a.m. caller. Office of Richard Grant. Maya's eyes stopped there, Karen continued. The caller requested that what they described as a sensitive student matter involving Mr. Grant's son be handled with appropriate discretion.

Walter leaned forward slightly. Maya read the line again. Before my second conduct warning. Yes. How long before?

3 days. Maya looked at Dean Bennett. The dean's face was tight, not defensive, ashamed. Karen said, "We also reviewed the internal note attached to the call." She slid over another page.

The note was short. Long-standing donor relationship. Avoid unnecessary escalation. Coordinate before formal action. Maya did not speak.
