It's not proof by itself, but it's what you need to make proof possible. Boon looked down at his coffee. He thought, "I've been carrying something useful for 25 years without knowing what it was for. And a woman I met 3 weeks ago has been carrying something useful for 9 years without anyone to carry it to. This was how things actually worked," he thought.

Not dramatically, not with clarity. Just two people who finally had their separate pieces in the same room at the same time. He walked back to the garage afterward, feeling something that wasn't quite hope, but was in the same neighborhood. Something steadier than hope, actually. Something with more patience to it.

He opened the bay doors, turned on the radio, got to work. The following Friday evening, Ren explained to him what Daltton Ree was actually doing. They were on the back steps, both of them with coffee, because she'd started drinking it that summer, and he decided it wasn't worth making into an issue. He doesn't do anything himself. She said he sets conditions.

He decide in the cafeteria, in the hallways, at practice, what the social temperature is, and everyone else reads it and adjusts like a thermostat. Like a thermostat, Boon said, exactly like one. She wrapped both hands around her mug. So, nobody at that school has done anything I can take to a teacher and say, "This specific person did this specific thing. What they've done is make it so I exist in negative space. " People look past me.

Conversations stop when I approach. I sit down and 2 minutes later, the table empties. Boon looked at the yard. One old oak tree already losing its leaves, but he'd started to like it. Something about the size of it implied decades he found reassuring.

"How's practice? " he said. Ren was quiet a moment. "Practice is different because Coach Foster doesn't run her gym on social temperature. She runs it on whether you can do the work. " A pause. And I can do the work.

I know. I'm probably going to make the squad, she said. Foster hasn't said it, but she stopped watching me the way she watches the others. She watches the others to see if they're good enough. She watches me to figure out where to put me.

The corner of her mouth lifted slightly. Different kind of watching. Boon felt something ease in his chest that had been tight since Monday. Not because the larger situation had changed, because he was watching his daughter read a room correctly and hold her ground inside it. And that was its own particular kind of relief.

Has Dalton been at practice? He said, "Football and cheer don't overlap, but he's in the parking lot sometimes when we come out. " She said it evenly. Not doing anything. Just there. Boon's jaw tightened.

He kept it off his face. Notebook, he said. 12 entries now. Dates, times, specifics. She looked at him.
