Madison stumbled into it with a startled gasp. Danny released her immediately. No punch, no follow-up, no attempt to hurt her. For one stunned heartbeat, nobody in the pavilion seemed to understand what they had just seen. Madison stared at Danny.

The confidence had vanished from her face. What did you— Tyler lunged forward. Get your hands off my sister! Tyler, stop! Professor Miller's warning came from somewhere behind the crowd.

Tyler did not listen. He came fast, larger than Danny, and fueled by humiliation. Danny saw everything—the lowered shoulder, the reaching arm, the weight committed too far forward. Years ago, those details had meant competition, timing, distance, and opponents searching for an opening. Now they meant something simpler.

Tyler, do not let him hurt you. Danny stepped off the line of his charge. Her hand guided his arm past her body as she pivoted. Tyler's own momentum carried him forward. Danny controlled the movement just long enough to keep him from crashing awkwardly, then redirected him onto the thick padded flooring used for rehabilitation demonstrations.

Tyler landed with a heavy thump. The jazz trio stopped playing. A glass slipped from someone's hand and shattered near the back of the pavilion. Danny stepped away immediately. Both hands open.

Stay back. Tyler stared up at her. His face showed something she had not seen in the lobby or beneath the stone archway. Uncertainty. He pushed himself halfway upright.

What the hell is wrong with you? Danny's breathing remained controlled. I asked both of you to stop. Madison turned from the padded wall. You attacked us.

No. Danny's voice carried through the silence. You hit me. He came at me. I stopped both of you. Liar.

Madison started toward her again. Margaret Cole stepped between them. Enough. The 68-year-old retired therapist's voice cut across the pavilion with surprising force. Madison froze.

Margaret pointed toward Danny. She warned you. Several witnesses shifted uncomfortably. Nobody had spoken before the slap. Now that the danger had passed, voices began appearing everywhere.

I saw it. Madison grabbed her first. She told her twice. Tyler rushed her. Danny heard the words and felt no comfort from them.

Where had those voices been 30 seconds earlier? Rachel still held her phone upright. Recording. Professor Miller finally reached the center of the crowd. Everybody, step back.

Tyler climbed to his feet, brushing at his jacket. You saw what she did. I saw enough. She threw me. You charged her.

Tyler stared at Miller as though the professor had violated some unwritten rule. Madison touched her wrist. She could have broken my arm. Danny looked at her, but I didn't. The words were quiet.

That made the room even quieter. Campus security appeared at the pavilion entrance. Two officers pushed through the crowd, followed by Michael Harris, Hawthorne's 61-year-old senior athletic trainer. What happened? One officer called.

Everyone started speaking at once. She attacked. Madison slapped. Tyler rushed her. There are videos.
