She heard one shoe scrape against brick, then another. The courtyard had become unnaturally quiet. 30 seconds earlier, students had been laughing. Now Maya could hear fountain water striking stone. She saw Chase before she actually looked at him.

His shadow stretched across the bricks beside her shoes. It widened. One arm rose. Her stomach tightened. Maya kept breathing.

Ryan watched her face carefully. 'People come here thinking Crown Bridge is just another college,' he said. 'It isn't.' Behind Maya, Chase planted his feet. Left foot forward, right foot back. His shoulders shifted. His right hand curled into a fist and rose behind her head. Several people saw it.

Maya knew because she watched their faces. A woman near the fountain covered her mouth. The young man holding coffee stared directly at Chase. A student on the administration steps took one instinctive step forward, then stopped. Emily's phone remained raised.

Recording. Ryan spread his hands. This place has traditions. Maya's heartbeat hammered against her ribs. She could turn.

She could move away. She could scream. Instead, she kept her eyes on Ryan. 'What tradition is this?' His smile returned. 'Excuse me?' Three people surrounding a new student while one of them raises his fist behind her. Chase shifted. Ryan glanced past her for the briefest instant.

Then shrugged. 'I don't know what you're talking about.' Maya looked around. Not quickly. One face at a time. There had to be 30 people within sight now. Students, staff, people standing on steps and beside benches, people with phones in their hands, people who had seen everything.

Nobody spoke. That hurt in a place Ryan's insults could not reach. Maya had expected cruelty from him. She had not expected silence from everyone else. Ryan noticed her looking.

His confidence grew. 'See?' He stepped closer. 'Maybe you should think carefully before making accusations.' Emily moved to Maya's side, framing her face with the camera. 'You look pretty angry,' she said sweetly. Maya turned toward the phone. The red recording light blinked. Emily wanted something. A raised voice.

A shove. A curse. Something that could survive after everything leading up to it had been cut away. Maya understood. So she lowered her book slightly and spoke in the same calm voice she had used from the beginning. 'Are you recording this?' Emily smiled. 'Every second.' 'Good.' The smile weakened.

Maya turned back toward Ryan. 'Then keep recording.' Ryan's jaw flexed. Behind her, Chase's fist remained raised. Maya could feel the threat without seeing it. She thought of her father. Not his new office.

Not the title he had accepted only days earlier. She remembered something older. Daniel Carter standing beside her at a Jefferson Heights bus stop years ago after a landlord had spoken to him as if being behind on rent meant being less of a man. Daniel had waited until the landlord left before saying quietly, never let somebody else's behavior choose yours. Maya had never forgotten it.

She straightened. Are you threatening me in front of all these witnesses? Her voice carried across the courtyard. Nobody could pretend they had not heard the question. Ryan slowly looked around.

The woman by the fountain dropped her eyes. The student with the coffee turned his cup in his hands. Someone on the steps suddenly became interested in his phone. Another student backed away. Maya watched courage disappear from face after face.

Ryan saw it too and smiled. 'What witnesses?' The words were almost gentle. That made them crueler. Maya felt something inside her sink. For the first time that morning fear gave way to something heavier. Loneliness.

Thirty people could see her and somehow she was standing there alone. Ryan leaned closer. You should remember this feeling. Maya said nothing. 'Because this is Crown Bridge telling you something.' Behind her, Chase shifted his weight. Emily's camera remained trained on Maya's face.

Ryan lowered his voice. You can transfer student. His eyes moved to the faded backpack. The used books. The old brass key. 'That doesn't mean you get to stay.' Then another voice crossed the courtyard.

Deep controlled. Close enough that everyone heard it. 'I am.' Ryan frowned. Maya did not move. The crowd turned toward the administration building. A Black man in a dark charcoal coat was walking down the broad stone steps.

He appeared to be in his early fifties. Silver touched the hair near his temples. A worn leather folder rested beneath one arm and his expression was so composed that only someone who knew him well would have noticed the anger beneath it. Maya knew him well. She saw it immediately.

His eyes moved first to Chase. To the raised fist. Then to Emily's phone. Then Ryan. Only after taking in every detail did he look at Maya.

The question in his face was simple. 'Are you hurt?' Maya gave the smallest shake of her head. Ryan didn't notice. He was too busy looking at the stranger's plain dark coat and making another assumption. 'Who are you supposed to be?' The man continued walking. Behind him two administrators had emerged from Heritage Hall. Both stopped.

One went completely still. Ryan laughed under his breath. 'Look, Professor. This doesn't concern you.' The stranger reached the bottom step. His gaze settled on Ryan. 'You asked what witnesses there were.' Ryan's smile faded slightly. The man stopped at the edge of the circle. 'I told you.' His voice remained quiet. 'I am.' Behind him the doors of Heritage Hall flew open.

A woman in a navy suit hurried outside clutching a folder against her chest. She saw the man standing in the courtyard. Then she saw Maya. Then Chase's fist. The color drained from her face and for the first time since he had stepped into Maya's path.

Ryan Whitmore looked uncertain. The woman in the navy suit hurried down the last few stone steps. One hand gripping a leather folder. The other raised as if she were trying to catch someone's attention before a meeting disappeared without her. 'President Carter,' she called. 'The trustees are waiting in the East Conference Room.' I told them you'd only be.. She stopped.

Laura Bennett, 45, Executive Assistant to Crown Bridge University's newly appointed president, stared at the scene in front of her. At Maya, at Ryan, at Emily's raised phone, and finally at Chase whose fist was still hovering behind Maya's head. President Carter? Someone whispered near the fountain. The words moved through the courtyard.
