She had never once said his name when there was no one else in the room to hear it. The sound of it stopped him completely. Adrienne was looking at him directly. Not the careful sideways glance he'd cataloged over the better part of a year, but full and still. The way she looked at things she had already decided about.

She reached into the inside pocket of her jacket and held out a small envelope. He took it without speaking. She said quietly enough that it might not have existed outside the four walls of that elevator. Come with me tonight. Terrence looked at the envelope.

He looked at her. He opened it. Inside was a photograph printed on standard paper like something pulled from an old digital file. It showed a younger Adrien, late 20s at most, standing beside a man he didn't recognize. Both of them were in front of what looked like a nonprofit event backdrop, smiling in the way people smile when a camera appears.

The man was well-dressed, confident, slightly older. He had the bearing of someone who expected to be listened to. Terrence flipped the photograph over on the back in clean handwriting. Harbor Light hasn't forgotten what you did. He read it twice.

His name is Donovan Price. Adrien said he'll be at the donor dinner tonight. Up pause. He was my mentor, my direct superior early in my career. The person with the most influence over what my professional life looked like for about 5 years.

She didn't elaborate. Terrence waited. I need someone in that room tonight who won't tell me what I want to hear. That was it. No explanation of the photograph.

No account of what Harbor Light was allegedly remembering. Just the request stripped down to its essential shape. She needed someone she trusted and she had chosen him. The elevator reached the lobby. Neither of them moved.

Terrence understood what she was asking. And he understood what it cost her to ask it. This wasn't a professional assignment. This was something else. Something Adrien Monroe had been managing alone for a long time and had decided tonight to stop managing alone.

He also understood what saying yes would cost him. Being seen at a private event with the CEO, not as staff, but as a companion would feed a rumor mill that was always hungry. People would draw conclusions. Some of those conclusions would follow him. He had a daughter to protect.

He had a career that belonged to him, not to anyone else's perception of it. The elevator doors opened. The lobby spread out ahead of them, quiet and lit in the way of office buildings. After hours, "I'll go," Terrence said. Adrien nodded, brief contained.
