It came out as something smaller but genuine. I imagine it was difficult to miss. Not always, he said. You're subtle when you want to be. Apparently not subtle enough.
They stood in the hallway. Below them through the window, the city continued at its regular pace, unaware and unconcerned. "So, what do we do with this?" Adrien asked. Terrence looked at her steadily.
"First," he said. "We deal with the fact that you're still my CEO former," she said. "You've been reassigned temporarily. The technical reporting line still exists." Then we resolved the technical reporting line.
That's what I'm saying. Adrien studied him. He was, as always, completely serious about the thing he was being completely serious about. There was no game in it. No leverage, just the same directness that had made her trust him before she'd fully understood why.
Okay, she said. Then we're agreed, he said. The resolution took several weeks, but it was not complicated. Adrien disclosed the nature of the developing personal relationship to our line's HR and legal teams as required by company policy. The disclosure was handled without incident.
Two weeks after the Harbor Light hearing, Terrence accepted a position he had been offered months earlier before any of this began. A senior research role at an independent strategy unit with a formal consulting relationship with Harbor Light. The role was his, not a consequence of Adrien, and he had been deciding about it long before a photograph appeared in an envelope in an elevator. He did not leave our line because of her. He left because the new role was the right move and he had known it for a while.
Adrien did not reshape his professional life to accommodate them. He did not ask her to. They remove the power imbalance deliberately without drama. The way adults handle a structural problem by addressing the structure rather than pretending it isn't there. And then carefully they began.
Three months later, it looked like this. Dinners on Thursday evenings after Ila's soccer practice at a place near Terren's apartment that did not take reservations and had excellent pie. Adrienne had discovered across several Thursdays that she was capable of staying at a table for 2 hours and not thinking about work, which was not something she had previously believed about herself. Ila had formed her own opinion about Adrienne, arrived at independently and communicated directly in the manner of a 10-year-old with no use for subtext. She's less scary than I expected, Ila told Terrence.
Approximately 45 minutes after their first dinner together. I never said she was scary. You never said she wasn't, Ila said, which was accurate. Adrienne had not arrived with gifts. She had not auditioned for anything.
