Then came the drive to school, the small game they played called One Good Thing, and finally the garage, Carter's auto, faded blue sign, two repair bays, one employee, one life built carefully from routine, because routine was safer than hope, safer than wanting anything more. But now a black luxury sedan sat outside his garage like a threat wrapped in polished metal, and Victoria Hayes stood beside it, waiting for him as if she had stepped out of another universe entirely. Daniel killed the engine of his truck and stared through the windshield for a second longer than necessary. Tony, his young mechanic, noticed immediately. Boss, he called from under the hood of a Honda Civic.

Either you owe somebody money or you just became famous. Daniel ignored him, though his stomach tightened. Anyway, the woman standing beside the sedan wore a charcoal blazer that probably cost more than everything inside his closet combined. Her dark hair was tied back neatly, not a strand out of place, despite the October wind. She looked composed in a way Daniel associated with lawyers and surgeons and people who never had to worry about overdraft fees.

Yet there was something unusual about her expression when she looked at him. Not arrogance, not pity, assessment, like she had spent days building a picture of him in her mind and was now comparing reality against expectation. Mr. Carter, she said when he stepped closer. Her voice was calm and precise. My name is Victoria Hayes.

Daniel shook her hand automatically. Firm grip, cool skin, steady eye contact. "You said your father wanted to meet me," he replied cautiously. "Richard Hayes." Even saying the name felt strange.

Everybody knew who Richard Hayes was. Billionaire investor, financial giant, one of those men whose face appeared in magazines next to headlines about power and influence and impossible amounts of money. Men like Richard Hayes did not spend years searching for mechanics from New Jersey. Victoria reached into her coat and handed him an envelope, cream colored, heavy paper, expensive enough that Daniel suddenly became aware of the grease still embedded in the lines of his fingers. My father asked me to give this to you personally, she said.

Daniel opened it slowly. Inside was a card with only two sentences written in dark ink. Mr. Carter, I have been searching for you for a very long time. I would be grateful for the opportunity to speak with you, signed Richard Hayes. Daniel read it twice, then a third time.

The sounds of the garage faded around him. Somewhere in the background, Tony dropped a wrench and cursed softly, but it felt distant, unreal. There has to be some mistake, Daniel said. Finally. Victoria shook her head once.

There isn't. I've never met your father. Something flickered in her eyes then. Not exactly amusement, more like certainty. You have, she said quietly.
