"Unofficially, I was curious whether you're always exactly the way my father described you." Something tightened unexpectedly in Daniel's chest, and he asked before he could stop himself. She studied him for a second longer than necessary. I haven't decided yet. The answer should not have affected him the way it did.

But somehow it stayed with him for the rest of the afternoon, lingering beneath every conversation and every accidental glance across the garage. Victoria remained for almost 3 hours. Long enough to watch Daniel talk an elderly customer out of an unnecessary repair that would have cost her hundreds. Long enough to see him quietly cover the bill for a delivery driver whose tire had blown and who admitted in embarrassment that he could not afford replacement parts until next week. Long enough to notice that every person who entered the garage seemed to trust Daniel instinctively.

Not because he demanded it, because he earned it without trying. At one point, she stood beside him while he worked beneath the hood of a Ford pickup, sleeves rolled slightly past her wrists as she held a flashlight for him. "You know," she said casually, "most people would have taken my father's money." Daniel tightened a bolt carefully before answering. "Most people probably should have, but not you."

He slid out from beneath the hood and looked up at her. I didn't want what happened that night to become a transaction. Victoria went quiet after that, not awkwardly, thoughtfully, like someone encountering an idea she had not realized she was missing. Then Ethan arrived from school earlier than expected and changed the entire rhythm of the room instantly. He pushed through the garage door carrying his backpack half open and stopped dead when he saw Victoria standing beside his father.

His eyes narrowed with complete and fearless curiosity. "Are you the rich lady?" He asked immediately. Daniel closed his eyes briefly. "Ethan, what?

You said there was a rich lady." Victoria surprised him by laughing softly instead of looking offended. I suppose technically yes, she answered. Ethan considered this seriously. Do you know anything about cars?

Almost nothing. That's okay, Ethan declared generously. Dad says ignorance is fixable if people aren't lazy. Daniel stared at his son in horror. Victoria bit her lip clearly trying not to laugh again.

Your father sounds wise. He is, Ethan replied without hesitation. Then with the fearless confidence only children possess, he dragged over a stool and began explaining every tool hanging on the wall in exhaustive detail while Victoria listened with genuine attention. Daniel watched them from across the garage and felt something deeply unfamiliar twist inside him. Not fear exactly, something more fragile.
