He found her in her office late one afternoon. What happened? Vivien said they had moved too close to a boundary and she was correcting it. Malcolm asked whether that was what she wanted or what someone else had convinced her she should want. The distinction doesn't matter.

It matters to me. His answer made the room smaller. Vivien tried to stay with professional logic, but eventually the truth came out. I don't want Amara dragged into this. Malcolm understood.

Then she was not rejecting him. She was trying to remove herself from a future problem before he could decide whether the problem was worth facing. Don't use my daughter to make a decision for me, he said. Vivien told him she was trying to be responsible. Malcolm answered that responsibility did not mean choosing what everyone else could survive without asking them.

If she wanted distance, he would respect it. But the choice had to belong to her, not to strangers who had turned his daughter into an argument. He left before she could hide behind another explanation. 3 weeks later, Crestvale held the children's futures gala. Malcolm considered skipping it, but absence would create another story.

Vivien attended because she was expected to. They kept their distance for most of the evening. Roland watched from the edges of conversation, satisfied that the pressure had done what pressure often did, separated people before anyone needed to order them apart. Near the bar, Malcolm heard a senior executive joke that the single father had finally found the ultimate benefits package. Another man said something about Amara's future college fund.

The laughter was low but intentional. Malcolm saw Vivien hear it, her shoulders tightened, and she turned as if preparing to walk away. Malcolm did not. He crossed the room and stopped in front of the men. What are you laughing at?

One man tried to dismiss it as harmless conversation. Malcolm asked him to explain why a man raising a child alone automatically became someone searching for a woman to pay his bills. The man said Malcolm was taking the joke too seriously. Malcolm's voice remained calm. Then explain it.

If it's funny, explain the part I'm missing. Nearby conversations began to die. Malcolm told them Amara already had a father. She did not need Vivien to rescue her. He had built his career before Vivien knew his name and had no intention of trading dignity for access.

Then he looked across the room at her. I don't look at her and see a bank account. He said, "I see the smartest person I've ever worked with. I see a woman who spent so many years proving she didn't need anyone that she started believing wanting someone was weakness. Vivien stood completely still.
