"Amara. " The girl frowned at him. "You did. " Vivien's mouth threatened to curve. "What else does your father say? " Amara considered the question. "That you don't rest enough. " Malcolm looked toward the ceiling. Vivien laughed before she could stop herself.

It was brief but real. Amara smiled as if she had discovered something. Malcolm stared because he had never heard Vivien laugh that way. Amara added that the office was too quiet and that everyone looked like they were trying not to get in trouble. Malcolm told her that observation did not need to be shared with the CEO.

Vivien nearly laughed again. She offered them an unused conference room until Amara could leave and continued toward the elevator. The encounter stayed with her. Malcolm listened to Amara corrected her without humiliating her and made space for her without turning every problem into a crisis. Fatherhood had not reduced him.

It had clarified him. That became even clearer when Malcolm was asked to lead a weekend trip connected to Blue Haven. It was the kind of assignment that could strengthen his standing with senior leadership. The dates fell on a school event Malcolm had promised Amara he would attend months earlier. He declined the travel, but proposed joining the critical sessions remotely, prepared a full briefing package, and recommended another strategist for the in-person meetings.

Several executives considered the compromise evidence that Malcolm lacked hunger. Vivien approved it after confirming the project would not suffer. Later, she asked him whether choices like that frightened him. "Yes," Malcolm said. The honesty surprised her.

He knew every boundary could cost him access to another room. Then he added, "I'm more afraid of waking up one day and realizing I won at work and lost with my daughter. " The sentence stayed with Vivien because it described a kind of failure she had never allowed herself to calculate. Their conversations changed after that. At first, the topics remained safely professional pressure, judgment, leadership, risk. Then they became harder to classify.

Vivien asked Malcolm how he managed being a father without another adult sharing the daily weight. Malcolm told her he did not manage perfectly and had stopped pretending balance was permanent. I just know what I can't let fall. Vivien understood immediately what she had refused to let fall for most of her adult life. Crestvale her authority her reputation control.

Everything else had been allowed to slip away. Malcolm, meanwhile, began seeing the difference between Vivien's reputation and her character. She remembered which analyst had a parent in the hospital and quietly moved a deadline. She kept credit attached to the people who earned it. She corrected junior employees privately.

She defended people in rooms where they were not present and never told them afterward. These were not grand acts which made Malcolm trust them more. The ice queen was not empty. She was guarded. One evening, after most of the Blue Haven team had left, Malcolm and Vivien spent nearly an hour arguing over the revised acquisition structure, neither yielded for status.
