For several seconds Karen Bennett did not move. Then she looked toward Daniel Cole. Pull the security footage. Daniel nodded once and reached for his radio. The room seemed to change with those four words.

Until that moment everything had depended on whose voice carried farther. Brooke had money. Evan had confidence. Karen had authority. Maya had restraint.

Now there would be timestamps. Angles. Sequence. Things that could not be interrupted or talked over. Daniel spoke into his radio and requested the Student Commons recordings from the previous half hour.

Brooke folded her arms. This is ridiculous. Walter looked at her. If you're telling the truth, the footage helps you. Brooke said nothing.

Maya noticed that. So did everyone else. The first student who had stepped forward held his phone carefully in both hands. My name's Aaron. He was 21 wearing a Crownbridge engineering sweatshirt.

Daniel looked at him. He recorded the incident. Aaron swallowed. Most of it. Why?

The question landed harder than Daniel intended. Aaron glanced toward Maya. His face reddened. At first he looked down because everybody else was. The confession sat heavily in the room.

No one laughed. Aaron continued. I thought it was just another argument. Then Brooke grabbed her. Maya watched him.

There was something painfully honest in his shame. He had not become brave in time to stop what happened. But he was trying not to stay silent afterward. Daniel held out his hand. Can I see it?

Aaron gave him the phone. Brooke stepped forward. He could have edited that. Aaron's head snapped up. I didn't.

Brooke looked at Daniel. You don't know that. A woman near the window spoke. Mine shows the same thing. She stepped into the open.

Her name was Rachel Morgan, 24, a nursing student Maya recognized from one of the science labs. Rachel held up her phone. I started recording when Brooke blocked Maya's path. Brooke stared at her. You were filming me?

Rachel's expression tightened. Yes. Why? Rachel looked toward Maya. Same reason he was.

Her voice dropped. I thought it was entertainment. Maya felt that sentence more deeply than she expected. Rachel took a breath. Then Evan shoved her.

She walked over and handed Daniel the phone. I should have said something then. Maya did not answer. Not because she wanted Rachel punished by silence. Because she was still trying to understand how many people had watched her humiliation become something casual.

Walter seemed to understand. He said quietly, showing the truth now matters. Rachel nodded, but her eyes stayed on Maya. It should have mattered sooner. That was the first real apology Maya had heard from anyone in the crowd.

Not polished, not comfortable, real. Daniel reviewed the videos while another security staff member brought over a tablet connected to the campus system. The crowd remained in place. Nobody wanted to leave now. Brooke noticed.

What is this? A trial? Walter looked at her. No. He paused.

A trial gives people time to prepare. Brooke's face tightened. Daniel turned the tablet around. Security footage is up. Everyone closest to him leaned in.

The first angle came from a ceiling camera near the cafeteria entrance. No audio. It did not need any. Brooke approached Maya's table. Maya stood.

Brooke blocked her. Maya moved left. Brooke moved left. Maya moved right. Brooke followed.

Then the cup went over. Brooke grabbed the front of Maya's jacket. Maya removed the hand and stepped back. Evan moved in. The shove was unmistakable.

Maya hit the edge of the table. A sound moved through the crowd. Not surprise. Recognition. They had seen it with their own eyes.

But seeing it again, framed cleanly and without Brooke's commentary, made denial feel impossible. Daniel played the next portion. Evan reached. Maya moved away. He reached again.

She moved away again. Then he grabbed her arm. Maya redirected him onto the table, released him. Brooke lunged. Maya stopped her wrist.

Released her. Then Evan charged. Maya took his balance, guided him down, and stepped away. Daniel paused the video. The still frame showed Maya several feet from Evan.

Hands open. Brooke stood near the table. Karen was visible at the edge of the shot. Already watching. Walter turned toward her.

You were there before the final exchange. Karen's face hardened. I had just arrived. You saw Evan shove her? The angle from where I stood.

Rachel cut in. You were looking right at them. Karen turned. This is not your meeting. Rachel looked shaken, but did not back down.

No. It's everybody's campus. The sentence surprised even her. Brooke scoffed. Oh, please.

Then Aaron spoke again. There's more. He took his phone back from Daniel and scrolled. I started recording before Ms. Bennett came over. He pressed play.

This clip had sound. The room heard Brooke mocking Riverton. Heard Maya say, I'm eating. Heard Brooke block her. Heard Maya say, I'm not doing this.

Then Brooke's hand struck the water cup. The recording continued. I'm not looking for trouble. Maya's voice. Clear.

Then Evan. That's not what your videos say. The room grew colder. Brooke's eyes flicked toward Maya. Aaron kept playing it.

Maya warned them. More than once. Move. Let go. Don't touch me again.

Then Evan shoved her. Maya never threatened him. Never challenged him. Never initiated contact. Daniel stopped the video.

Brooke's face had gone pale. Evan stared at the floor. Karen crossed her arms. This still involved physical contact on both sides. Walter looked at her.

Both sides. She restrained them physically. After being grabbed and shoved. Karen tightened her jaw. I'm saying this may qualify as mutual escalation.

Lisa Grant laughed once. Not because anything was funny. It was a sound of disbelief. Mutual. Karen looked at her.

Lisa stepped forward. I watched Brooke humiliate that young woman last week. Brooke rolled her eyes. Lisa raised her voice. No.

You're going to hear me now. The commons went silent. Lisa pointed toward the marble floor. Right there. Brooke knocked Maya's tray down.

Milk everywhere. She stepped on her notes. Told her to pick it up. Brooke looked toward Daniel. That has nothing to do with today.

It has everything to do with today. Lisa said. Her voice trembled now, but she kept going. Maya didn't yell. Didn't touch her.

Didn't threaten her. She cleaned up the mess while everybody filmed. Maya felt her throat tighten. Lisa looked around the room and I let her. The words stopped Maya cold.

Lisa pressed one hand against her chest. I told myself I was working. That I couldn't leave the counter. That Maya shook her head because she didn't want help. Her eyes filled.

But I still let her kneel there alone. Nobody moved. Lisa looked directly at Maya. I'm sorry. Maya's eyes burned.

She blinked hard. Lisa turned back to Daniel. So don't you stand here and call what happened today mutual. I watched that girl absorb more disrespect than most people in this room would tolerate for 30 seconds. Karen looked away.

Walter did not. He kept his eyes on her. And what about your meeting with Maya? Karen stiffened. What about it?

Maya's pulse shifted. Walter said. You warned her that her scholarship gave her more to lose. Karen's face hardened. That was a private advisory conversation.
