"I'm not going to fight your battles for you. But I won't let anyone convince you that you deserve to be treated this way."

He leaned forward.

"Remember our three rules."

Maya rolled her eyes.

"Observe, document, tell you."

"Exactly."

He paused.

"And remember something else. Racism doesn't always announce itself with shouting. Sometimes it arrives wearing a polite smile and pretending nothing happened."

Maya looked down at her notebook.

For the first time, she wondered whether the university administration was protecting the wrong people.

The situation became worse during the following week.

Tyler began appearing wherever Maya happened to be.

He would stand near her classroom, make comments as she walked past, and occasionally position himself between her and the nearest exit.

Britney encouraged him.

She enjoyed watching Maya become uncomfortable.

During a university recreational sports session, Tyler approached Maya with two football teammates.

"Hey, Atlanta."

Maya turned.

"What?"

"You're pretty quiet."

"Is there something you need?"

Tyler smiled.

"Just trying to make friends."

"Then try being friendly."

One of his friends laughed.

Britney, standing several feet away, shook her head.

"She's got an attitude."

Maya started walking away.

Tyler stepped into her path.

"You're always acting like you're better than everybody."

"I'm just trying to get to class."

"Then maybe you should learn how to respect people."

Maya looked directly at him.

"Respect goes both ways."

Ellie appeared behind him with her phone raised.

"Tyler, move. You're blocking the walkway."

He glanced at the camera.

"Put that away."

"Why? Afraid somebody might see how you behave?"

Tyler stepped aside.

But his expression had changed.

That evening, he sent a message in a private group chat.

Friday night. Miller's Field. We're settling this.

Britney responded with a laughing emoji.

Another student asked what they were planning.

Tyler answered:

Bring rope. She needs to learn that she can't disrespect people here.

The messages were eventually forwarded to an account David had been monitoring with the help of a former military colleague who specialized in digital investigations.

David read them twice.

Then he called Maya.

"Have you received an invitation to a party?"

Maya frowned.

"Why?"

"Just answer the question."

"Britney mentioned a bonfire on Friday. Why?"

David was silent for a moment.

"Because I want you to be careful."

Maya's expression changed.

"What's going on?"

David turned his laptop toward her.

The group chat was visible.

Maya read the messages.

Her stomach tightened when she reached the word rope.

"They're planning something."

"Yes."

"Then we should report them."

"We will. But I want to make sure the university and the authorities have the original evidence."

Maya stared at the screen.

"What if they actually try something?"

David met her eyes.

"Then they will have to answer for it."

Friday evening arrived beneath a cold autumn sky.

Miller's Field was a secluded clearing beyond the university's athletic facilities. Students sometimes gathered there for bonfires, parties, and weekend celebrations.

Britney had invited Maya personally.

She had even sent a friendly message suggesting they should start over.

Maya knew it was a trap.

But David had already contacted the local authorities and arranged for the threats to be documented. He had also positioned himself near the field with Ellie, who agreed to remain close to Maya throughout the evening.

"Stay together," David instructed them before they left.

Maya nodded.

Ellie adjusted her jacket.

"I've never been part of anything this terrifying."

David gave her a faint smile.

"Then let's make sure it's also the last time."

He checked his phone.

"Perimeter is ready."

Maya looked at him.

"Please don't do anything reckless."

"I won't."

He placed a hand on her shoulder.

"And remember, you have every right to leave. You don't owe those people an opportunity to hurt you."

Maya nodded.

Then she and Ellie headed toward the clearing.

The bonfire was already burning when they arrived.

Music played through portable speakers. Students stood in small groups holding drinks and laughing beneath the trees. Orange flames illuminated the surrounding darkness.

Britney spotted Maya immediately.

"Well, look who came!"

Several students turned.

Maya kept her shoulders straight.

"You invited me."

Britney smiled.

"Of course. We wanted to make you feel welcome."

Tyler stood behind her.

He was holding a thick length of rope.

Ellie noticed it immediately.

Her fingers tightened around Maya's arm.

"Something's wrong."

Maya nodded.

"I know."

Tyler stepped forward.

"Come on, Atlanta. We have a little tradition for new people."

"What tradition?"

"An initiation."

Maya shook her head.

"I'm not interested."

Britney laughed.

"Don't be boring. It's harmless."

Maya looked around.

Several students were already holding their phones.

Some appeared uncomfortable.

Others were clearly waiting for something entertaining to happen.

"Ellie, let's go."

They turned toward the trail.

Tyler stepped in front of them.

"Not so fast."

Maya stopped.

"Move."

Tyler's smile disappeared.

"You've been making us look bad all semester."

"I haven't done anything to you."

"That's the problem. You think you can walk around here ignoring everybody."

Ellie raised her phone.

"Tyler, get out of the way."

He turned toward her.

"Nobody asked you."

Then he gestured to his friends.

Two young men moved toward Maya.

She stepped backward.

"Don't touch me."

One grabbed her backpack strap.

The other seized her arm.

Maya struggled to pull away, but they dragged her toward an enormous oak tree at the edge of the clearing.

Ellie screamed.

"LET HER GO!"

Britney stood watching.

"Maybe now she'll learn."

Maya tried to pull her arm free.

"You're making a serious mistake!"

Tyler laughed.

"You're the one who should be worried."

The boys forced Maya against the tree.

One held her shoulders while the other wrapped the rope around her wrists and the trunk.

The knot tightened.

Maya pulled against it.

"Stop! Let me go!"

Her voice carried through the clearing.

Several students lowered their phones.

This was no longer an ordinary college prank.

Tyler stepped closer.

"Now you're going to listen."

Maya turned her face away.

"Get away from me."

He grabbed her chin.

"Look at me."

She jerked her head aside.

"Don't touch me!"

Tyler ignored her refusal.

He pulled her face toward his and forcibly pressed his mouth against hers.

Maya struggled against the rope, turning her head away and trying to push him back with her shoulder. The unwanted contact lasted only a moment, but it was enough to leave her shaken and humiliated.

When Tyler finally stepped back, he wore a smug expression.

"Maybe now you'll remember me."

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

Not because she had accepted what happened.

Because she was furious that he believed he could do it and get away with it.

Ellie was crying now.

"Somebody help her!"

A few students began shouting at Tyler.
