I dried off. Your daughter expected you to bring that umbrella home. Emily recovered from the tragedy. Rachel almost laughed, but Michael's expression remained gentle and serious. "I did not know who you were," he continued.

"That matters now. Why? Because Friday, if I helped you, nobody could say I wanted anything. Today. If you thank me too loudly, someone might decide I am trying to turn one umbrella into a promotion.

Rachel looked toward the employees beyond the glass. She understood immediately. Power had changed the meaning of ordinary things. A conversation could become access. A smile could become favoritism.

Gratitude could become currency if people wanted badly enough to believe it was. I would never reward someone for giving me an umbrella, she said. I know. Then what are you worried about? Michael met her eyes.

People do not have to be right for rumors to cost you something. The air conditioning hummed softly above them. Outside, yesterday's rain still clung to the windows and pale streaks, and somewhere down the corridor, a service cart rolled across polished tile. Rachel had spent years learning how authority opened doors. Michael was showing her how it could quietly close them, too.

All right, she said. No special treatment. Thank you. No private gratitude. Even better, no expensive umbrella replacement.

Michael finally smiled. Now you are learning. Rachel smiled back. For a brief moment, Friday returned between them. Simple and unguarded.

Then Marcus appeared carrying a clipboard. Sorry to interrupt this completely ordinary conversation between two completely ordinary employees. Michael gave him a warning look. Rachel raised an eyebrow. Is he always like this?

Unfortunately, yes. Good. I was worried you were the difficult one. Michael laughed before he could stop himself. Rachel walked away a minute later, carrying nothing from him except the memory of that laugh.

Michael watched her disappear toward the elevators, then returned to his schedule. He believed distance would protect them both. Rachel understood his reasoning, but something about it stayed with her all afternoon. Hundreds of employees now knew her title. Michael was the only one who seemed determined to forget that he had once known her without it.

You are the lady Dad gave our good umbrella to. Emily Carter stood beside Michael's desk Wednesday afternoon, studying Rachel Whitmore with the fearless curiosity only a 10-year-old could carry into a workplace full of adults. Michael closed his eyes. Emily, what she is? Rachel smiled.

I am and I returned it. Emily nodded seriously. Good. That one actually works. Michael looked at Rachel.
