And that would have been bad. Yeah. She met his eyes. That would have been bad. Ethan's heart did something complicated in his chest.

I'm just a high school teacher. I live in a house with a wobbly table and eat frozen pizza on Friday nights. You run a billion-dollar company. This doesn't make sense. No, Selena agreed.

It doesn't. So, why are we here? Because you gave me a break when I needed one. Because you didn't see a billionaire or a disaster or a problem to fix. You just saw someone who'd had a bad day.

She leaned forward. Do you know how rare that is? It shouldn't be rare. It should be normal. It should be, but it's not.

She reached across the table, her hand stopping just short of his. I'd like to see you again if that's okay. Ethan looked at her hand at the space between them that felt both impossible and inevitable. Yeah, he said quietly. That's okay.

They met again the following week and the week after that. Coffee turned into dinner. Dinner turned into walks through the park. walks turned into late night phone calls where Selena told him about board meetings and hostile investors and Ethan told her about Khloe's latest obsession with dinosaurs and the student who turned in an essay written entirely in haiku. Bring her next time, Selena said one night. Chloe, I'd like to meet her.

Ethan's chest tightened. You sure about that? Why wouldn't I be? Because meeting my daughter makes this real. Makes it complicated.

It's already real, Ethan. It's been real since I walked into your bathroom. So, he brought Chloe. They met at the park on a Saturday afternoon. Khloe wore her favorite dinosaur shirt and eyed Selena with the kind of suspicion only an 8-year-old could muster.

"You're the lady from dad's shower," she said. Selena blinked. "He told you about that. He tells me everything." Khloe crossed her arms. Are you his girlfriend, Chloe?

Ethan started. It's okay. Selena crouched down to Khloe's level. I don't know yet. Do you think I should be?

Chloe studied her for a long moment. Can you do cartwheels? Not even a little bit. Can you make pancakes? I can pay someone to make pancakes.

That's cheating. You're right. It is. Selena smiled. But I can learn if you teach me.

Something shifted in Khloe's expression. The suspicion faded, replaced by cautious curiosity. Okay, but they have to be chocolate chip. Deal. They spent the afternoon at the park.

Selena pushed Khloe on the swings, asked a thousand questions about dinosaurs, and didn't once check her phone. When Khloe ran off to the playground, Ethan sat beside Selena on the bench. "You're good with her," he said. "I'm terrified." doesn't show. Yeah, good.

She watched Chloe climb the jungle gym. I've never done this before. The whole kid thing. I don't know the rules. There aren't any rules.

You just show up and try not to screw it up too badly. That's your parenting philosophy. That's my everything philosophy. Selena laughed and the sound made something warm spread through Ethan's chest. He reached for her hand.

She let him take it. This is crazy," he said quietly. "I know. You live in a different world. You close billion-dollar deals.

I teach teenagers about Shakespeare and and I don't know how this works." Selena turned to face him. "Me neither, but I'm willing to figure it out." "Are you?" Ethan looked at Chloe, laughing on the playground. looked at Selena, still holding his hand, looked at the life he'd built out of safety and routine and the possibility of something else entirely. "Yeah," he said. "I am." That night, after they dropped Khloe off at her grandmother's, Selena kissed him for the first time, standing in his driveway under the same porch light that had been burning the night she walked into the wrong house. I'm glad I can't read street signs," she whispered against his mouth.

Ethan kissed her again. "Me, too, ma." The weeks blurred into months. Selena started spending more time at the house, the one with the wobbly table and the iron man shower curtain. She learned to make chocolate chip pancakes. Khloe taught her about dinosaurs.

Ethan taught her that not everything required a business strategy or a PowerPoint presentation. And slowly, carefully, the three of them started to feel like something Ethan had given up hoping for a family. But in the back of his mind, a question lingered. How long could this last? How long before Selena's world pulled her back?

How long before she realized that frozen pizza and wobbly tables weren't enough? He didn't ask, didn't want to know. For now, he just held on and hoped the wrong door had led them somewhere, right? three months in, Ethan started noticing the small fractures. Not in what Selena said, but in what she didn't say. The way her phone would light up during dinner and her jaw would tighten.

The way she'd excuse herself to take calls that stretched past midnight. The way she smiled at Khloe while her eyes stayed somewhere else entirely, calculating problems Ethan couldn't see. He didn't push. Pushing meant questions. And questions meant admitting that maybe this whole thing was more fragile than either of them wanted to believe.

It was a Tuesday night when everything shifted. Khloe was asleep upstairs and Selena sat at the kitchen table with her laptop, the blue screen washing her face in cold light. She'd been typing for two hours straight, barely blinking. You're going to go blind staring at that thing, Ethan said, setting a cup of tea beside her. She didn't look up.

Just finishing something. You said that an hour ago. This time I mean it. But her fingers kept moving across the keys, fast and precise, like she was fighting a war in emails. Ethan sat down across from her, waited.

After 5 more minutes, Selena finally closed the laptop and rubbed her eyes. "Sorry," she said. "It's been a long day. They're all long days lately." She looked at him, then really looked, and he saw the exhaustion written in every line of her face. "I know.

I'm trying to There's just a lot happening right now. Like what? Selena picked up the tea, held it between her hands without drinking. The Singapore expansion. The board approved it last week.
