Hawkins’s intake receipt listed Leonard’s tractor as arriving at 6:12 p.m. Leonard’s phone video showed it still being loaded onto the recovery rig at the travel center at 6:29.

“You noticed this?”

“I told my lawyer.”

“What did he say?”

“Clerical error.”

Vanessa stared at the eighteen-minute impossibility.

Clerical error was possible.

A pattern would make it something else.

Rosa and Esteban Mendez produced another intake discrepancy. Twenty-nine minutes.

Harjit Singh’s receipt differed by forty-one.

Thomas Wynn’s by twenty-three.

Vanessa wrote every time on one page.

Four cases. Four trucks arriving on paper before they physically reached Hawkins Recovery.

That afternoon Captain Deborah Sloan called.

“Mrs. Cole, we need you to come to the Greenridge County Sheriff’s Office to correct paperwork related to yesterday.”

Vanessa asked, “Am I under arrest?”

“No.”

“Then my attorney will join.”

“That isn’t necessary.”

“Then neither is my presence.”

Sloan paused. “Bring counsel.”

Civil-rights attorney Monica Ellis met Vanessa in the parking lot. Monica was forty-two, sharp-eyed, and had already read everything Vanessa sent overnight.

“You sign nothing.”

“I know.”

“You answer only what helps us clarify status.”

“I know.”

“You are very annoying to represent.”

Vanessa smiled. “Marcus says the same thing.”

Inside, Sloan sat beside Pike in a narrow conference room. Mallory was absent.

Captain Sloan had blonde hair cut precisely at the jawline, a pressed white uniform shirt, and the controlled politeness of someone who rarely needed to raise her voice because everyone understood she could make problems disappear through paperwork.

She slid a form across the table. “Routine correction.”

Vanessa read.

CONSENT TO COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SEARCH AND VOLUNTARY INSPECTION ACKNOWLEDGMENT.

The document said she had voluntarily consented to a complete inspection of the tractor and trailer at Pine Hollow.

Vanessa looked up. “I refused.”

Pike leaned back. “There was confusion.”

“No.”

“Stress affects recollection.”

“My truck audio recorded the refusal.”

For half a second, nobody moved.

Sloan recovered first. “Then perhaps we clarify the wording.”

Monica leaned forward. “By having my client sign something false?”

“Counsel, we are trying to avoid an unnecessary dispute.”

Monica smiled. “You’re doing fascinating work.”

Sloan’s politeness cooled. “Your client has larger problems.”

She placed three photographs on the table.

Each showed a small tracking device inside an evidence bag.

“These were recovered from the trailer’s rear access compartment.”

Vanessa studied the evidence labels.

Discovery location. Date.

Time.

6:19 p.m.

Her mind stopped on the number.

The Peterbilt left Pine Hollow at 5:58.

The normal route to Hawkins Recovery required at least forty-five minutes in evening traffic.

There was no way the truck arrived before 6:19.

She gave no visible reaction.

Sloan watched her. “Devices of this type are frequently used in cargo-theft operations.”

“They are not mine.”

“That remains under investigation.”

Pike said federal freight contracts could be suspended. Company operating authority might be reviewed.

The hospital shipment could remain evidence. Insurance carriers might freeze coverage.

Then Sloan pushed the consent form forward again. “If you confirm you cooperated with the inspection, we can resolve certain ambiguities before they become unnecessarily damaging.”

Monica laughed. “You’re asking her to repair your search retroactively.”
