Pike stepped forward and took the phone from Mallory. “General Cole, Sergeant Randall Pike. We have a commercial vehicle and freight-security investigation in progress.”

Marcus asked, “Did the tractor return as stolen?”

Pike hesitated. “We’re still verifying.”

“Then what have you verified?”

Pike’s expression hardened slightly. “With respect, General, your position has no bearing on local law enforcement.”

Marcus answered immediately, “Correct.”

That was not the response Pike expected.

Marcus continued, “Which is why I am not telling you to release her because she is my wife. I am asking what lawful basis you have for searching her cab, detaining her, or interfering with a federally documented medical shipment.”

Pike looked toward the truck. “The matter is developing.”

Vanessa said quietly, “That phrase again.”

Marcus heard her. “Renee—”

“Vanessa,” she corrected automatically, then almost smiled because even in the middle of the stop her husband managed to call her by his sister’s name when stressed.

“Sorry.” Marcus took a breath.

“Vanessa, do you have your normal documentation?”

“Yes.”

“Camera?”

“Running.”

“Then I’m staying out unless you ask me not to.”

Pike’s eyebrows lifted. Vanessa understood what Marcus had just done.

He gave her the choice.

“I don’t need your office involved yet,” she said.

Marcus paused. “Understood.”

Then his voice became firmer. “Sergeant Pike, do your job carefully.”

Pike ended the call.

Mallory stared at Vanessa. “You’re actually married to that guy?”

“That should not matter.”

It mattered to him. She could see the fear arrive behind his eyes.

Pike reacted differently. His face became harder, almost offended by the idea that he might appear intimidated by rank. Vanessa had seen that type of pride before too. People sometimes became more unreasonable after learning they had made a dangerous mistake because retreat felt like admitting the mistake existed.

Pike pointed toward the trailer. “We’re impounding the tractor and load pending verification.”

Vanessa stared at him. “On what basis?”

“Possible freight irregularity and compromised seal.”

“The seal matches.”

“That does not resolve every issue.”

“You began with a stolen truck.”

“Investigations evolve.”

Vanessa reached slowly for the small notebook inside her jacket. “What are you doing?” Pike asked.

“Writing the time.”

She looked at his badge. “Sergeant Randall Pike.”

Then Mallory’s. “Officer Brent Mallory.”

Mallory smirked. “You think writing names scares us?”

“No.”

Vanessa wrote both. “I think memories improve when paper exists.”

The heavy recovery truck arrived forty-three minutes later. Its door carried the logo Hawkins Recovery & Commercial Storage, a company Vanessa knew only because roadside towing in Alabama could become ruinously expensive for heavy rigs. The driver, Eli Benton, stepped down wearing grease-stained jeans and carrying a clipboard.

He walked around Vanessa’s Peterbilt once and looked toward Pike. “Commercial seizure order?”

Pike handed him a document. Eli read it.

“This is law-enforcement hold only.”

“Yes.”

“No mechanical issue?”

“No.”

Eli glanced toward Vanessa. “You the owner?”

“Yes.”

He looked uncomfortable. “All right.”

Before the rig moved, Vanessa photographed everything. Tractor mileage.

Fuel level. Tire condition.

Fifth-wheel connection. Trailer seal.

Door latch. Cargo temperature.

Dash condition. Towing unit number.

Eli watched. “You always do that?”

“Today I do.”

Mallory laughed. “She thinks she’s building a Supreme Court case.”

Vanessa photographed the seizure form. “No.”

She looked at the handwritten time. “I’m protecting a truck.”

The official impound time said 5:46 p.m.

The Peterbilt left Pine Hollow at 5:58.
