The night sky above Crestwood High shimmered with strings of golden fairy lights that danced across the surface of the school's large swimming pool. It was the biggest night of the year: the annual end-of-term party. Music pulsed through speakers, laughter echoed across the courtyard, and students dressed in their best outfits posed for pictures near the glowing fountain. But in the middle of that brightness stood one girl who didn't belong. Her name was Emma Carter, 17, quiet, shy, and known for keeping to herself.

She wasn't supposed to be there. Her best friend had begged her to come, saying, "You need to stop hiding. It's just a party. No one's going to notice you." But they did notice her, especially Briana Hail, the queen of the school. Confident, loud, and cruel when she wanted to be, Briana wore her status like a crown.

Emma wore a simple white dress, modest but elegant. Her soft brown hair was tied in a low ponytail, and she stood near the edge of the pool, holding a plastic cup of juice and trying to avoid the crowd. Briana spotted her like a predator spotting easy prey. "Look who showed up!" Briana shouted, and her group of friends turned their heads. Laughter followed, sharp and cold.

"Did someone forget to tell you this is a party, not a church choir?" They laughed louder. Emma forced a small smile, pretending it didn't bother her, but her trembling hands gave her away. She tried to walk away, but Briana stepped into her path, her eyes full of mockery. "What are you even doing here, Emma?" Briana said, circling her like a hawk. "You think wearing white makes you special?

You think someone will notice you for once?" Emma swallowed hard and shook her head. "I just wanted to enjoy the party like everyone else," she said softly. But that only made Briana smirk more. "Enjoy the party," she echoed. "Then why don't you make a splash?" Before anyone could react, Briana shoved her hard.

The sound of water exploded as Emma fell backward into the pool, her drink flying from her hand. Her white dress soaked instantly. Gasps filled the courtyard. The music stopped, and phones came out. Some people laughed, while others whispered, but no one moved to help.

Emma surfaced, coughing and shivering as cold water soaked her hair and clung to her skin. She looked around, her eyes wide with shock and humiliation. Briana stood by the pool's edge, pretending to look innocent. "Oh my gosh, I didn't mean to," she said dramatically. Her friends giggled behind their hands.

"It was just an accident." But everyone knew it wasn't. And then something happened that no one expected: a deep voice cut through the silence. "Enough." All heads turned. Principal Alexander Reed stood on the balcony above the courtyard, still dressed in his formal black suit. He had watched everything.

His face was unreadable, but his eyes burned with quiet anger. Without hesitation, he strode down the steps, ignoring the murmurs. The crowd parted as he reached the pool's edge. For a brief second, no one knew what he would do: scold Briana or help Emma out. Instead, he did something that stunned the entire school.
