Her response came a few minutes later. I lied because I was afraid you would leave. I read it twice. Then another message appeared. I know that doesn't excuse anything.

I waited. I loved the attention Ryan gave me. I liked knowing someone still wanted me. Even after I met you, I didn't completely let that go. I didn't answer.

She continued. I told myself it didn't matter because I was going to marry you. I thought once we were married everything would become different. That sentence stayed on the screen. She had finally said something honest.

Not enough to repair anything, but honest. Then she sent one final message. I'm sorry I made you build a marriage on a lie. I put my phone down. An hour later, I received another message.

Do you hate me? I thought about that question for a long time. Then I answered. No. Three dots appeared.

Then what do you feel? I looked around my apartment. There were no wedding photos, no reminders of Christine, no evidence of the life we had planned. Just my things arranged exactly the way I wanted them. I don't feel anything I need to act on anymore.

She didn't respond immediately. When she finally did, it was only three words. I understand now. I didn't know if she really did. Maybe she did.

Maybe she didn't. Either way, it wasn't my responsibility anymore. I put my phone away and went back to making dinner. That was the real consequence for both of us. Christine had lost a marriage she believed would protect her from the consequences of her choices.

I had lost the future I thought I was building, but I had also gained something I hadn't expected. I no longer had to question whether the person beside me was telling me the truth. And for the first time in a long time, that felt like enough. A year after my divorce, I stopped thinking about Christine every day. At first, everything reminded me of her.

A restaurant we had visited, a song from our wedding, a certain brand of coffee she liked. Even the date on the calendar sometimes caught me off guard. Eventually, those things stopped meaning anything. Life became ordinary again. I worked, saw my family, went out with friends, and spent weekends doing whatever I wanted without explaining myself to anyone.

I didn't rush into another relationship. I wasn't interested in proving that I had moved on. I just wanted to know who I was when I wasn't somebody's husband. Then, one Saturday morning, I decided to clean out the storage closet. I found the external drive where I had saved the evidence from the night I discovered everything.

I hadn't touched it in more than a year. I plugged it into my computer. The folders appeared on the screen. Photos, messages, receipts, the video from the bachelorette party. For a few seconds, I considered opening it.

I didn't. There was nothing left to learn. I already knew what happened. Instead, I opened the folder containing the old messages. I scrolled through them.

Christine and Ryan talking. Christine asking when he would be around. Ryan asking if she was happy with me. Christine saying she was. Then, another message.

I wish things were different. I remembered sitting at that same desk months earlier, staring at those words, and feeling like the floor had disappeared beneath me. Back then, I thought that message was the end of my life as I knew it. Now, it looked different. It was simply evidence of a decision Christine had made before I ever knew there was a problem.

I selected the entire folder. Then, I deleted it. The computer asked me if I was sure. I clicked yes. I emptied the recycle bin.

Then, I disconnected the drive. That was it. No anger, no satisfaction, just finished. That afternoon, I met my brother Patrick for lunch. He asked me how things were going.

Good. Really? Really. He smiled. You finally sound like yourself again.

I thought about that. I think I am. He didn't ask about Christine. Neither of us needed to talk about her anymore. Later that evening, I drove home with the windows down.

I stopped at a grocery store on the way. As I walked through the parking lot, I noticed a woman standing beside a car with a flat tire. She looked frustrated and was trying to figure out what to do. I walked over. Do you need a hand?

She smiled. Unless you know how to make a tire repair itself. I don't, but I can change it. She laughed. Then you're already more useful than the roadside assistance company.

We talked while I worked. Her name was Megan. We exchanged numbers before I left. Nothing dramatic happened. No instant connection.

No promise that this was the beginning of something serious. Just a normal conversation with someone who didn't know anything about my past and I liked that. A few weeks later we went for coffee, then dinner, then another dinner. It was slow, easy. There were no secrets to uncover and no explanations I had to force out of anyone.

One evening Megan asked me why my last marriage ended. I could have given her the entire story. Instead, I told her the truth without dragging her through every detail. My wife cheated on me shortly before our wedding. I found out 5 months after we got married.

Megan looked at me. That must have been awful. It was. Are you still angry? I thought about it.

No. How did you get past it? I smiled. I stopped trying to change what happened. That was the truth.

Christine's betrayal had changed my life, but it didn't get to decide what the rest of my life looked like. She had made a choice 2 days before our wedding. I made mine 5 months after and for the first time I understood the difference. She had hidden the truth because she was afraid of losing me. I walked away because I refused to lose myself.

That was the part I carried forward. Not the video, not Ryan, not the lies, just the lesson. Trust isn't something you demand after breaking it. It's something you protect before you ever have the chance to lose it.
