5 months after our wedding, I found out my wife had cheated on me at her bachelorette party. Not 5 months before the wedding. Not during some rough period in our marriage. Two days before she stood beside me, looked me in the eyes, and promised she would be faithful to me for the rest of our lives. His name was Ryan Calloway.
And when I first saw him, I had no idea who he was. Christine and I had been married for exactly 5 months. Our life had settled into a routine that felt normal. I worked as a commercial electrical supervisor, which meant long days, early mornings, and plenty of calls that could not wait until tomorrow. Christine worked in marketing for a regional furniture company, and usually had more predictable hours.
We weren't the couple who posted everything online. We didn't fight constantly. We weren't secretly miserable. As far as I knew, we were doing fine. That was why the discovery hit me so hard.
It happened on a Tuesday evening. Our home security system had started warning me that the storage drive was almost full. I had installed the system myself, so I spent about an hour going through the old recordings and deleting footage we no longer needed. Christine was upstairs getting ready for bed. When I finished with the security system, I stayed at my desk and decided to clean up our shared cloud account, too.
We used it for household documents, vacation photos, and automatic phone backups. I started going through old folders. Most of them were boring. Receipts, vacation pictures, work documents, random videos we'd forgotten about. Then I noticed a video file I didn't recognize.
It had been uploaded from Christine's phone several months earlier. I checked the date. It was from her bachelorette weekend. I almost skipped past it. Then I saw the file name.
Cabin 2. I opened it. The video looked like it had been recorded on someone's phone and later backed up automatically. It showed a rented cabin, a living room full of women, music playing, and several bottles on the table. Christine appeared near the center of the room.
She was wearing the white dress her friends had bought for. I smiled for about 2 seconds. Then a man walked into the frame. I didn't recognize him. Christine did.
The way she looked at him told me that immediately. He put his hand around her waist. She laughed. One of her friends shouted from behind the camera, "Ryan, you're not supposed to be here." The man laughed. Christine looked toward the camera and smiled.
Then she leaned toward him and kissed him. I stopped breathing. The video continued. Her friends started laughing and cheering. Someone shouted, "Get a room, Christine." Christine pulled away from Ryan and looked directly at the camera.
Then she took his hand. They walked toward a hallway. The video ended before they disappeared completely. I stared at the screen. Then I checked the date again.
Two days before our wedding. I watched the video a second time, then a third. There was no way to explain away what I had just seen. I downloaded a copy to an external drive before closing the file. Then I heard Christine walking downstairs.
I closed the laptop. She came into the room and looked at me. "Why are you still working?" I looked at her for several seconds. "Christine." She stopped. "Who was Ryan?" Her face changed instantly, and that was when I knew the video wasn't the worst part.
It was the fact that she knew exactly who I meant. Christine stared at me. For 3 seconds, she didn't say anything. Then she laughed. Not because anything was funny.
It was the kind of nervous laugh people use when they're trying to buy time. "Ryan?" "Yes." She folded her arms. "Why are you asking me about Ryan?" That answer told me more than she probably realized. I leaned back in my chair. "So, you know him?" "Of course I know him." "From where?" "He was there that weekend." "The bachelorette party?" "Yes." She said it too quickly.
I watched her carefully. How well do you know him? Christine looked away. He's a friend of one of my friends. Which friend?
Why does that matter? Because I just watched you kiss him. Her face went completely still. For a moment neither of us moved. Then she sat down.
Where did you see that? I almost smiled. She hadn't denied it. She hadn't asked what I was talking about. Her first question was where I had found the evidence.
That's your first question? She swallowed. Joshua, I can explain. Then explain. It wasn't what you think.
I stood up. I watched the video three times. It was a stupid mistake. You kissed another man two days before our wedding. I know.
And then you walked away with him. Nothing happened. I stared at her. You expect me to believe that? Yes.
No. Her eyes filled with tears. Joshua, please. I was drunk. Everyone was drinking.
My friends were joking around. Ryan showed up because he knew one of them. It was stupid. Why didn't you tell me? Because I knew you'd react like this.
Like what? Like you're reacting now. I shook my head. You weren't worried about my reaction. You were worried about me finding out.
She didn't answer. I went back to the desk and opened the video again. I want the truth. You have the truth. No, I have 30 seconds of video.
She wiped her eyes. There was nothing serious between us. That's not what I asked. She looked at me. I kissed him.
That's it. And the hallway? I went upstairs because I was sick. I stared at her. You expect me to believe you left the room with a man you had just kissed because you were sick?
I was. Then why was he holding your hand? I don't remember. Convenient. Her voice became sharper.
I told you what happened. No, you told me the smallest version of what happened. She stood up. What "What you want from me? I want to know who Ryan really was." "He was nobody." "Then why did you recognize his name immediately?" She froze again.
I knew there was more. That night, I didn't shout. I didn't throw anything. I didn't threaten Ryan. I simply told Christine I was going to bed.
