"I grew up in a town smaller than this parking lot. I waitressed. I... I know what it's like to be the one people look through." She wiped her face, smearing makeup.

"And the second I had money, I became the worst version of the people who used to look through me. I know that. I've known it for years, and I hate it. I hate..." She couldn't finish.

Ethan stared at his wife like he'd never seen her before. "Vanessa—" "Shut up, Ethan." She didn't even look at him. "Just for one minute in your life, shut up."

She turned back to Travis. "You don't owe us anything. You don't owe us a bailout. You don't owe us a second chance."

"You don't owe us your signature. We were cruel to you for no reason except that being cruel felt good and we thought you couldn't fight back. There's no excuse for it. There's no complicated."

"We're just..." Her voice dropped. "We're just not very good people. And I'm tired of pretending we are."

The courtyard was dead silent. Travis Reed studied her for a long moment. He'd spent 50 years reading men and women, and he could tell the difference between a confession and a tactic the way a jeweler can tell glass from diamond. What he was looking at now was not a tactic.

It was a woman watching her whole life come apart and, for the first time, not reaching for a lie to patch it. "That," Travis said slowly, "is the first true thing either of you has said all day." Ethan, sensing an opening, jumped on it. "Yes, yes, exactly."

"We're being honest now. We're... Mr. Reed, that has to count for something, doesn't it? Honesty. You value that."

"I can tell you value that." Just like that, Travis's face closed again. "You see what he just did?" Travis said, not to Ethan, but to Vanessa.

To everyone. "Your wife told the truth and bled doing it. And his first instinct, his very first instinct, was to figure out how to use it. How to turn her honesty into leverage on me."

He shook his head. "She broke. You calculated. That's the difference between the two of you, and it's the whole difference in the world." Ethan's mouth opened, then closed.

Because it was true, and he knew it was true, and the knowing was a kind of nakedness he'd never felt before. "Daniel," Travis said, "what happens to Whitmore Holdings if I don't sign?" Daniel consulted nothing. He knew the file cold.
