It wasn't strong, but it wasn't small, either. Calder paused, then gave a short nod. Inside, the bell rang, bright, out of place, and then silence. Every head turned. Again, Ingrid stepped in behind Calder, instinct pulling her close to his back, trying to disappear behind a man she barely knew.
The smell hit her first. Coffee, leather, wood, a place full of life that had suddenly stopped breathing. "Afternoon. " Calder said. No greeting came back right away, just staring. ""That her? "" a voice from the back, sharp, barely hidden. ""His wife. "" The word hadn't even been spoken yet, and already it felt wrong in their mouths. "This is Miss Sorenson. " Calder said.
His tone made it clear he would not repeat himself. Still, the whispers came, low, cutting. ""She'll break the bed. Hope he built it strong. " A soft laugh. Another. Ingrid moved toward a shelf.
Picked up a jar. Didn't look at it. Just needed something in her hands. Something steady. The glass reflected her face.
Pale, tight. Her fingers trembled slightly. She gripped harder. Behind her, Calder's hand hit the counter. Hard.
The sound cracked through the room. Flower, wider. He said. Now. The storekeeper jumped.
The whisper stopped for a moment. Just a moment. Ingrid set the jar down carefully. Too carefully. Like it might shatter if she breathed wrong.
When they stepped back outside, the air felt easier. Not kinder, just wider. She took a breath. It tasted like dust. But it was hers.
The ride continued. Longer now. The town falling behind them. The land opening again. Calder spoke after a while.
"The ranch is hard work. " No softness. No apology. "I expect it done right. " Ingrid nodded. "I can work. " "I believe that. " Simple. But it landed heavier than anything else he had said.
She turned her head slightly. Looked at him. Really looked. His face was set. Worn, not cruel.
Just built for survival. "Is that why you sent for me? " she asked. "Work? " He didn't answer right away. The wheels rolled. The wind moved.
Then, "Partly. " Honest, but not complete. She saw that. Felt it. But didn't push. The ranch came into view as the sun dipped low.
