Clara's stomach tightened. She had not taken money. She had taken Warren's gambling records hidden inside the lining of her carpet bag. They proved he had stolen from the Denver bank where he worked. Warren lunged.

He struck Clara aside and seized her rifle. Silas moved toward him, but the wound slowed him. Warren fired. The bullet tore through Silas's shoulder and threw him against the cabin wall. Clara hit the frozen ground.

Heat spread across her cheek where Warren's ring had cut her. He turned the barrel toward Silas again. Clara grabbed the iron shovel beside the woodpile and swung with both hands. The flat blade struck Warren's wrist. His shot passed above Silas and shattered the warning bell.

Deputies dragged Warren down before he could reach another weapon. Clara crawled to Silas. Blood soaked his elk hide coat, but his fingers closed around hers. "Still not sleeping. " He muttered. "I'm not done with you. " The sheriff found Warren's false theft report inside his saddlebag.

By sunrise under the cold pale light of morning, Warren rode toward Bear Creek with his wrists tied in his own hired men walking behind him. Clara rode beside Silas in the sheriff's wagon holding pressure against his shoulder. The town doctor removed the bullet. Silas lived. The winter passed before he could lift a rifle without his arm shaking.

Clara did not spend those months waiting quietly. The gambling records sent Warren to prison. His bank returned part of her father's money. She used it to purchase Ashford's abandoned lodge after his creditors placed it for sale. She repaired the roof, widened the kitchen, and placed a sign beside the trail.

Whitmore Mountain Lodge, travelers welcome. Silas stared at the name when he first walked down from his cabin. You kept his name? Clara pulled Warren's old papers from her pocket and fed them into the lodge fire. It was mine before it was his.

Silas placed an antler ring on the table. And Creed? Clara looked from the ring to the man who had carried her through the storm, then held out her hand. That name I'll choose. They married outside the lodge when spring broke the last river ice.

The sheriff stood witness. The storekeeper brought coffee. And travelers filled every bench Clara had built. That night rain tapped the new roof while firelight moved across their room.

Silas closed the door and faced her, his voice low as distant thunder. You can sleep when I'm done with you. Clara took the lamp from his hand, set it aside, and pulled him close as the fire snapped behind them.
