Adrian looked directly at both women.
“My name is Adrian Cole.”
Silence.
“I founded Common Table Coffee.”
Paige’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Grant stared at him.
On the screen behind Adrian appeared an old photograph of an eleven-year-old Black boy standing beside Lucille Cole beneath a Seattle bus shelter.
Then another photograph.
Adrian’s first coffee cart.
Then the original Pioneer Square storefront.
Finally the company slogan.
THERE’S ROOM AT THE TABLE.
“My mother helped inspire this company after she and I were treated as though we did not deserve a chair in someone else’s café.”
Adrian looked around the room.
“I built Common Table because I believed dignity should not depend on someone knowing your income, title, job, neighborhood, or usefulness.”
He clicked the remote.
Brooke’s black notebook appeared.
Gasps moved across the room.
PRIORITY.
DON’T WASTE TIME.
Stars.
Xs.
Customer descriptions.
Adrian let them read.
Then his own entry appeared.
Old raincoat guy. Loose change. Acts like he knows coffee. X.
Brooke closed her eyes.
Adrian looked toward her.
“Would you like to explain why customers were being classified this way?”
She said nothing.
“Paige?”
Nothing.
The next slides showed complaints.
Dozens.
Then hundreds.
Words appeared across the screen.
Ignored.
Judged.
Unwelcome.
Humiliated.
Adrian clicked again.
Maya Bennett’s schedule filled the screen.
Opening shifts.
Closing shifts.
Week after week.
Then recipe-development documents appeared.
Maya’s handwritten dates on one side.
Grant Holloway’s corporate submissions on the other.
The autumn maple roll.
Smoked honey pear Danish.
Cinnamon orange twist.
Six more products.
Maya first.
Grant later.
Grant stood.
“Recipe development is collaborative.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Then explain the complaint records.”
The screen changed.
Maya’s attribution requests.
Her emails.
Her supporting documentation.
Each one marked closed.
Several signed or approved by Grant.
He slowly sat down.
Adrian continued.
“Explain why the same employee whose products drove regional sales received the least desirable schedule.”
No answer.
“Explain why she was suspended immediately after showing basic kindness to someone you considered undesirable.”
Grant stared at the table.
The evidence had finally reached the point where confidence could no longer carry him.
Adrian picked up three folders.
He handed the first to Brooke.
“Brooke Mercer, your employment ends today.”
Her hands trembled.
No applause followed.
