Jada looked at him. “You kept putting your hands on me.”

“You threw me.”

“Onto mats.”

That answer made several students finally notice what she had done. Jada could have driven him onto concrete.

She had deliberately redirected him toward the safest nearby landing surface. Coach Pierce would later consider that detail as revealing as the throw itself.

Madeline asked where Jada learned to do that. Jada did not answer.

She turned toward the entrance. Chloe lowered her phone slightly.

One student behind them said, “Wait, I’ve seen her before.” Jada stopped for half a second.

The boy took out his phone. “What’s your last name?”

She continued walking.

“Monroe,” Sofia answered as she returned carrying two bottles of water.

The student typed quickly. Jada heard him say, “No way.”

She knew what he had found before he turned the screen around. The tournament photograph.

JADA MONROE — VIRGINIA JUNIOR JUDO STATE CHAMPION.

The whisper traveled through the group faster than any explanation could. Chloe looked from the phone to Jada.

“You’re a state champion?” Jada kept walking.

Madeline called after her. “Why didn’t you tell anybody?”

Jada turned once. Her expression was calm.

“Because I shouldn’t need a title for you to leave me alone.”

Then she walked inside with Sofia.

That was the moment the ten-second video ended. Online, it looked perfect.

Quiet girl surrounded. Popular boy steps forward.

Girl throws him onto mats. Crowd discovers she is a champion.

Instant karma.

The full story was far less satisfying.

Assistant Principal Grant called Jada, Evan, Madeline, and Chloe into separate offices before field day ended. Several students had already shown teachers the video.

Evan claimed Jada attacked him without warning. Chloe’s recording contradicted that almost immediately.

It showed him blocking her path. It captured Jada asking him to move.

It captured him touching her after she told him to stop. It showed the group laughing and encouraging the confrontation.

Most importantly, it showed Jada using a single controlled throw and stopping instantly. She never pursued Evan.
