He spent decades searching for whatever Thomas hid in this house. Is that why he wants to buy it? To tear it down and find the secret? Probably, Ethan admitted. But we're not going to let that happen.
This is our home now and our history. We just need to figure out what Thomas wanted us to find. They spent the morning studying the map and journal for additional clues. According to the parchment, the next location in Thomas's trail was marked by a heart symbol somewhere in the library. They searched methodically, examining bookshelves, moldings, and furniture for anything resembling the heart design from the key.
"Dad, look at this," Noah called, pointing to a leatherbound volume on a high shelf. Unlike the other books, its spine featured a small embossed heart that matched their key. The book titled Great Expectations by Charles Dickens contained no hidden compartments or loose pages. But as Ethan leafed through it, he noticed faint pencil marks underlining certain words and phrases throughout the text. When read in sequence, these highlighted portions formed a message.
Beneath the place where hearts are joined, where two become one, you will find the next step of your journey. Hearts joined. Two become one, Ethan muttered, turning the clue over in his mind. That sounds like a wedding reference. The master bedroom, Noah exclaimed.
That's where married people sleep. The master suite occupied the entire east wing of the second floor, a spacious retreat with tall windows overlooking the gardens. The bedroom itself featured an elegant four poster bed, matching wardrobes, and a sitting area with a small fireplace. Above the bed hung a large oil painting of the mansion as it had appeared in its prime, surrounded by manicured grounds and formal gardens. Hearts joined.
Two become one, Ethan repeated, scanning the room for anything heart-shaped. Maybe it's the bed, Noah suggested. That's where married people sleep together. Ethan examined the bed frame carefully, running his hands along the ornate headboard. The wooden posts were carved with intricate patterns, including he now noticed, small heart motifs at each corner.
When he pressed one of these hearts, nothing happened. But when he pressed two diagonal hearts simultaneously, literally joining them, a soft click came from beneath the bed. Together, they moved the heavy bed frame aside to reveal a section of flooring that differed subtly from the surrounding boards. The hard symbol from the key had been inlaid into the wood using a lighter species, nearly invisible unless you knew to look for it. The inlaid section proved to be a removable panel.
Beneath it lay a small metal box locked and sealed against time. The brass key fit this lock as well, and inside they found a collection of old photographs, letters, and a small leather pouch. The photographs documented Thomas and Sophia's secret relationship, quiet moments by the river, a picnic in a secluded meadow, Thomas holding an infant James with an expression of bittersweet joy. The letters were from Sophia to Thomas, written over the years of their separation, full of longing and regret. The final letter, dated April 197, just before Thomas disappeared, contained a warning.
William suspects everything now. He's found our letters, though. But thankfully not all of them. He's threatened me, saying he'll take James away if I don't cooperate with his plan to blame you for the financial irregularities. I fear what he might do to you, to us all.
