Kelsey stepped closer until the girls were almost chest-to-chest. She accused Zuri of using Delgado, administrators, scholarships, and race to make herself important in an athletic program that had functioned perfectly before she arrived. Zuri answered that Ridgeview had functioned perfectly because people like Kelsey had rarely been forced to hear the word no.

The comment landed. Madison inhaled sharply. Kelsey’s face reddened.

“You think you’re better than us.” Zuri shook her head. “I think I’m not beneath you.”

For several seconds, nobody moved. Then Kelsey placed both hands against Zuri’s upper chest and shoved.

Zuri stumbled backward into the lockers. The metal doors rattled loudly enough that Brittany’s phone jerked. Zuri lifted both hands and said, “Do not touch me again.”

Kelsey came forward. She shoved toward Zuri’s shoulder a second time, then swung when Zuri knocked her arm away.

Zuri ducked. The punch passed over one shoulder. Kelsey threw another.

This time Zuri blocked it with her forearm. “Stop,” she shouted, backing toward the wooden bench. Kelsey did not.

The fight became chaotic quickly. Kelsey rushed forward throwing wide punches, while Zuri moved backward through a locker room barely wide enough for two people to pass comfortably. Brittany and Madison retreated toward the far wall, their expressions changing from amusement to alarm as the confrontation became something they had not planned to record.

Kelsey grabbed for Zuri’s braids once and missed. Zuri shoved her away and moved around the bench. Kelsey followed.

Zuri had taken recreational boxing classes with her older cousin during sophomore year, mostly because Anthony believed his daughter should know how to protect herself. She was not a trained fighter, but she knew how to keep her hands up, stay balanced, and stop chasing when distance existed. Those lessons returned before she consciously thought about them.

Kelsey swung. Zuri slipped outside it and countered with a short punch to create space. Kelsey staggered, then immediately charged again.

The two collided with the end of the wooden bench. Kelsey caught herself and pulled at Zuri’s shoulder while Zuri pushed free. Madison shouted Kelsey’s name.

Nobody listened. Kelsey attacked again.

Zuri blocked, stepped sideways, and landed another counter. Kelsey continued forward, visibly angrier each time Zuri moved rather than staying close enough to hit. Eventually she lunged with her entire weight behind one swing.
