The key fob forced her to.

Imani always wished the conversation had been enough.

Years later, if people asked whether she regretted not getting angrier, she laughed.

“What would anger have proven?”

Sometimes they said it would have felt satisfying.

Maybe.

But Imani knew how quickly an angry Black woman could become the part of the story people remembered instead of the behavior that provoked her.

She had learned that long before Bellweather.

Remaining calm did not make her morally superior.

It was simply the choice she made.

Another Black woman might have raised her voice.

She would still have deserved respect.

That mattered too.

Imani refused to create a new rule where dignity required perfect behavior from the person being stereotyped.

People could be impatient.

Annoyed.

Poorly dressed.

Rich.

Casual.

Angry.

Quiet.

None of those qualities turned discrimination into a misunderstanding.

That became the final lesson she carried.

One summer afternoon, years after everything, Imani drove the Ferrari back to Bellweather for a preservation fundraiser.

She handed the key to a young Black valet.

He recognized the car but not her.

“Beautiful,” he said.

“Thanks.”

“First time here?”

Imani looked toward the revolving doors.

“No.”

She smiled.

“Not even close.”

He gave her a claim ticket.

No assumptions.

No strange questions.

No directions toward a staff entrance.

Imani walked inside.

Behind her, the Ferrari disappeared into the garage.

Nobody gathered around it.

Nobody filmed.

Nobody needed to learn a lesson.

The afternoon remained completely ordinary.

Imani considered that progress.

Because the strongest ending to a story about prejudice was never watching somebody get embarrassed when their assumption collapsed.

It was building a world where the next person did not have to prove the assumption wrong at all.
