Walter immediately forgave everyone.

The fight had never become the most interesting thing about her.
That was the victory she valued.
Bellmont eventually invited Simone back to speak at an environmental-science alumni event.
She agreed.
The lake looked almost unchanged.
Same reeds.
Same walking path.
Same muddy bank.
The university had replaced the folding chairs used by the angling club.
Simone laughed when she noticed.
A group of undergraduates was conducting water sampling nearby.
One Black student knelt beside a clear container while a white student wrote measurements on a clipboard.
Nobody stared.
Nobody joked about food.
Nobody questioned who belonged beside the water.
They were simply scientists.
Simone stood there longer than necessary.
Professor Ramsey, now grayer and moving more slowly, eventually joined her.
“You thinking about that day?”
“A little.”
“Still angry?”
Simone considered it.
“More about everything before it.”
Ramsey nodded.
“The university should have connected the pattern sooner.”
“Yes.”
He did not defend Bellmont.
Simone appreciated that.
The dramatic video had forced action, but students should not need dramatic evidence before institutions recognized repeated harm.
That was the lesson she carried into every university workshop she later taught.
