Madison stepped closer. “You edited that.” Nyla said the district technology office disagreed.

That was when Madison’s fear became anger. She told Nyla she had spent the entire year destroying people’s lives by turning jokes into racism. Nyla answered that Madison had spent the entire year trying to explain why a Black girl’s achievements were never really hers.

Madison moved even closer. “You think you’re better than everybody here.” Nyla shook her head.

“I think I’m not beneath you.” The sentence carried farther than either girl realized because the podium microphone was still live.

Several students reacted. Madison glanced toward the audience and saw hundreds of faces staring at her, then looked toward the stadium screen still showing the stage. Humiliation changed her expression. Nyla took a step backward and told her to move.

Madison swung first. Nyla leaned away, blocked the strike, and told her to stop. Madison attacked again.

Nyla responded only after the second attempt, using one short counter to create distance. Claire rushed toward them, initially shouting Madison’s name, while Assistant Principal Reyes and two security officers moved from the side stairs. Madison tried to close the space again, but Nyla shoved her away and stopped when the adults reached them.

Principal Foster took Nyla’s phone. She looked at the messages, then at Claire. “Is this your account?” Claire did not answer.

The ceremony stopped for nineteen minutes. Parents watched faculty confer while seniors whispered across rows of chairs and the giant screen went dark. Madison and Claire were escorted to a room inside the athletics building with their parents, while Nyla stood backstage wrapped in two towels somebody had found in the training room.

Vanessa reached her first. She had climbed down from the bleachers before security tried to stop her. When she saw Nyla shaking, she pulled her daughter into a hug without caring that water soaked the front of her dress.

“I’m fine,” Nyla kept saying. Vanessa nodded. “I know, but you don’t have to be fine this second.”

Darnell arrived thirty seconds later and looked ready to walk through a wall. Nyla told him not to do anything stupid. He stared at his soaking-wet daughter, then laughed once despite himself.

“That’s supposed to be my line.” Nyla finally smiled.
