Then Marcus Ellison emerged from the rear seat carrying his leather portfolio.
He saw his daughter.
Stopped.
Then started walking.
Sloane noticed the security officer before Caroline did.
“Caroline.”
Caroline ignored her.
“Caroline.”
“What?”
She turned.
Marcus was already ten yards away.
The girls went quiet.
Amara did not move.
Marcus reached the shelter and looked at the severed tie on the ground.
Then at the scissors.
Then at Caroline’s hand still near his daughter’s blazer.
“Take your hand off her.”
Caroline released the fabric immediately.
Marcus’s voice was calm.
That made it worse.
Caroline looked toward Reeves and assumed Marcus was another administrator or parent brought in by security.
“It was a joke,” she said.
Marcus looked at Amara.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“Did she cut your tie?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell her to stop?”
“Three times.”
Marcus nodded.
Then Dean Bell and board chair Eleanor Hastings appeared from the administration walkway after receiving a call from Reeves.
Caroline’s expression changed when she recognized Hastings.
The board chair looked from Marcus to Amara.
“Mr. Ellison?”
Marcus pointed toward his daughter.
“This is Amara.”
Hastings froze.
Everyone knew Marcus Ellison had a daughter at Ashford.
Almost nobody knew which student she was.
Caroline looked at Amara.
Then Marcus.
Then the security officer.
The meaning arrived slowly.
Marcus did not smile.
He did not use the moment to announce his credentials.
He simply picked up the cut piece of tie from the pavement.
Hastings turned toward Bell.
