She stepped out wearing a long white coat over cream trousers, pointed beige heels, and sunglasses. A structured tan designer handbag hung from one arm.

Her long auburn-brown hair was tied back.

Nothing about her looked furtive.

That detail fascinated Marcus later.

Vanessa did not hide her face.

She did not run.

She walked toward the porch like someone approaching property she believed she had every right to inspect.

The doorbell camera captured her full body.

She looked toward the street once.

Then toward the package.

Vanessa stepped onto the mat.

She bent down.

Her hand closed around the long purple parcel.

For a moment, she simply held it.

Then she turned.

The camera recorded her walking back toward the Rolls-Royce.

No hesitation.

No note.

No attempt to contact anyone.

She reached the vehicle.

Then the evidence parcel activated.

A violent-looking but harmless burst of dense purple marking powder erupted around her.

The image disappeared behind color.

Purple filled the camera view.

Vanessa screamed.

The cloud covered the front of her white coat, her hair, her handbag, the driver’s side of the Rolls-Royce, and much of the driveway around her.

She stumbled backward.

The package dropped.

For several seconds, only purple haze and pieces of bright powder drifting through sunlight were visible.

Then Vanessa emerged from it.

Her white coat was streaked violet.

Her face showed complete disbelief.

She looked toward the porch.

Then toward her car.

The Rolls-Royce was splattered with the same purple marker.

Vanessa shouted something the doorbell microphone could not clearly capture.

She picked up the parcel again.

That decision would matter.

Instead of leaving it on the driveway, she tried carrying it toward the SUV.

Two unmarked vehicles pulled into view.

Investigators stepped out.

Vanessa froze.

From the neighbor’s window, Henry Wallace watched the entire thing with his mouth open.

He later told Marcus the scene looked less like police work and more like a television commercial for consequences.

Danielle did not see it live.

Neither did Marcus.

They had intentionally stayed away.

The detective called twenty minutes later.

“We have what we needed.”

Danielle closed her eyes.

“Did anyone get hurt?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Marcus whispered, “Ask about the car.”

Danielle elbowed him.

The video itself was almost ten seconds of absurd perfection.

Rich HOA vice president.

White designer coat.

Tan luxury purse.
