“Actually, that’s too easy.”

They waited.

“The neighborhood was never entirely like that.”

He looked down the street.

“Most people were normal.”

“Some were scared.”

“Some weren’t paying attention.”

“A few knew pieces.”

He shrugged.

“The problem survived because nobody had all the pieces in one place.”

Marcus nodded.

“What changed?”

“People started comparing notes.”

That was as simple as Nolan could make it.

No heroic reveal.

No secret government job.

No billionaire relative.

No powerful title.

Just documents and neighbors finally putting one page beside another.

That same summer, Sophie finished college.

At graduation, Nolan and Claire sat beneath an unforgiving sun while families fanned themselves with commencement programs. Sophie crossed the stage wearing honors cords, accepted her diploma, and disappeared into a crowd of hundreds.

Later, over dinner, she asked Nolan whether he still had the brick.

He nearly dropped his fork.

“Why would I keep the brick?”

“You kept the notice.”

“That’s paper.”

“So?”

“Paper files.”

“Bricks don’t.”

Claire laughed.

Sophie shrugged.

“I thought maybe you kept it as evidence.”

“Police photographed it.”

“Where is it now?”

“No idea.”

Sophie looked disappointed.

Nolan studied her.

“Did you want it?”

“No.”

“Then why ask?”

She thought for a moment.

“Because I realized I don’t picture it anymore.”

Nolan became still.

Sophie continued.

“I remember the sound.”

“I remember being scared.”

“But when I think about the living room, I see the new window now.”

Claire reached across the table.

“That’s good.”

Sophie nodded.

“Yeah.”

Nolan looked down at his plate.

He had spent years assuming healing would feel like a final conclusion.

Instead, it sounded like his daughter casually admitting the window had become a window again.

Nothing more dramatic was necessary.

The original fake notice stayed inside Nolan’s HOUSE PAPERWORK folder.

Not framed.

Not displayed.

Just filed behind the architectural approval for the cedar cabinet.

That placement amused him.

Approval first.

Fake violation second.

The truth and the lie on adjacent pages.

Every few years, somebody new on the HOA board asked whether old records could be purged to reduce storage.

Nolan always said yes to most of them.
