They complained about homework.

One asked another whether she had a phone charger.

Nobody discussed who had attended Ashford since kindergarten.

Naomi smiled.

The ordinary scene mattered more than she expected.

Inside the administration building, a long display showed photographs from Ashford’s history. Older classes were overwhelmingly white. The more recent photographs looked different.

Not perfectly different.

Not magically transformed.

Simply broader.

Naomi stopped beside a current debate-team photograph.

Three Black students stood in the front row.

The caption did not describe them as diversity fellows.

They were just debaters.

That was the kind of progress Naomi trusted.

During the alumni panel, a student asked what she considered the worst part of what happened.

The audience expected her to say the scissors.

She did not.

“The hardest part was having to prove the pattern one incident at a time,” Naomi said.

The student looked puzzled.

Naomi explained.

“A joke looks small. A note in a locker looks small. One comment looks small, and the next one can look small too. If adults reset the clock every time, the student being targeted lives inside a pattern nobody else is willing to name.”

The room became quiet.

“That’s why documentation can matter,” Naomi continued. “But teenagers also shouldn’t have to build legal files before adults decide they deserve help.”

Adrian heard about the line afterward.

He pretended to be offended.

“So my advice about writing things down was terrible?”

Naomi laughed.

“Your advice was useful.”

“That sounds better.”

“My school should have made it unnecessary.”

Adrian considered that.

Then nodded.

The old video continued resurfacing every few years.

Its captions became less accurate with time.

One claimed Madeline had been expelled.

She had not.

Another said Adrian owned Ashford.

He did not.

One particularly imaginative version claimed Naomi secretly belonged to an African royal family.

Adrian immediately sent that one to the family group chat.
