Sophie looked at Erin.

Erin smiled.

“Small senior thing.”

There were sophomores in the chat.

Everybody knew it.

Nobody said so.

Aaliyah went home angry for the first time.

Not hurt.

Angry.

There was something exhausting about being excluded while the person doing it insisted exclusion was imaginary.

She told Denise the whole story.

Her mother listened from the kitchen table.

“Do you want to quit?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“Then why are you acting like leaving is the only way to get peace?”

Aaliyah looked at her.

Denise continued.

“You earned the team.”

“You do not have to surrender the thing you earned so somebody else can feel comfortable.”

The next morning, Aaliyah spoke to Coach Harding.

She brought the photograph.

Described the missing chat.

Mentioned the shoes.

Coach Harding looked genuinely disturbed by the picture but cautious about everything else.

“Did you see anyone put your shoes in the shower?”

“No.”

“Do you have the chat?”

“No.”

“Did Erin directly say anything racial?”

Aaliyah stared.

“No.”

Coach Harding sighed.

“I’m not saying nothing is happening.”

“It sounds like you are.”

“No.”

The coach leaned forward.

“I’m saying I need something I can act on.”

Aaliyah left feeling worse than when she entered.

That phrase followed her for months.

Something I can act on.

Apparently repeated humiliation did not count until the evidence became neat enough for adults.

Aaliyah decided she would give them neat evidence.

She began saving screenshots.

Writing down dates.

Recording exact comments in her notes app.

Sophie helped.

The first useful screenshot arrived in October after Erin complained in a team group chat about a promotional photo featuring Aaliyah, Sophie, and two other cheerleaders.

Why is she always front now?

Another girl replied:

Coach picked the photo.

Erin wrote:

Yeah, well, Ridgeway cheer used to have a certain look.

Someone asked what she meant.

Erin answered:

You know exactly what I mean.

Nobody did.

Or everybody did.

The screenshot reached Coach Harding.

Erin claimed she meant visual consistency, not race.

Coach Harding issued a warning.

Linda Caldwell called the school and accused administrators of twisting an innocent comment into something ugly.

The principal, Andrew Mallory, decided the evidence was concerning but not sufficient for formal discipline.

Erin learned something from that decision.

Ambiguity protected her.

So she became more careful.

No direct comments about Aaliyah’s hair.

No written references to “look.”

No obvious exclusions.

Instead, she corrected Aaliyah publicly during practices and apologized privately afterward.

She bumped her shoulder while passing and called it crowded spacing.

She dropped pom-poms near Aaliyah’s feet and asked why Aaliyah was “always so tense.”
