He almost smiled. Evelyn, I've watched you for 5 years. She said, "I know what staying looks like on a person, and I know what leaving looks like. You're still here. That's your answer."
He looked at her. He tried to take everything, Andre said quietly. My badge, my record, my reputation. He tried to make me into the explanation for everything he did. Yes, she said.
And for about 2 hours this morning, he said it worked. Yes, she said again. No flinching, no softening. That's what I keep coming back to, Andre said. Not that it failed, that it almost didn't.
Evelyn was quiet for a moment. Outside, a cloud moved across the sun, and the light in the lobby shifted, not dramatically. Just the ordinary shift of daylight in a building. The kind of change you only notice if you're paying attention. You know what I've learned in 27 years?
Evelyn said, "Almost is not the same as is." She turned to face him directly. He almost got away with it. You almost lost everything. Almost.
But neither of those things happened. And what did happen? What is happening right now today in this building? That's the real story. Not the almost.
Andre looked at her for a long moment. Then he looked back out the window. I'm going to need you, he said quietly. If I take this position, if I do this, I'm going to need people I can trust who know this building. I've been here 27 years, Evelyn said.
I know where every body is buried. Figuratively. Figuratively, he confirmed. Most of them, she said. And this time, unmistakably, there was something like a smile at the corner of her mouth.
His phone rang. He looked at the screen. Investigator Harris. Williams. He answered.
