"No."
Vale nodded toward the office.
"Privately."
Thomas stared at him.
Then followed.
Daniel closed the door behind them.
Vale remained standing.
"So."
Thomas waited.
Vale smiled.
"Calvin found you."
Thomas felt something inside him settle.
Confirmation.
Not of everything.
But enough.
"You know he's alive."
"I've known for years."
Thomas's jaw tightened.
Vale sat.
"I assume he's told you a dramatic story."
"He told me facts."
"Calvin has always had difficulty separating the two."
Thomas didn't rise to it.
Vale continued.
"Whatever you think happened during North Lantern, reopening those files helps nobody."
"It might help Calvin."
"Calvin survived."
"His mother died believing he didn't."
Vale's expression didn't change.
"Operational security sometimes requires unpleasant sacrifices."
Thomas stared.
"You rehearsed that?"
"No."
"You should. It almost sounded human."
Vale leaned back.
"Be careful."
Thomas smiled faintly.
"There he is."
Vale's face hardened.
"You have a family."
Thomas's smile disappeared.
The room became very quiet.
Vale realized what he'd done.
Thomas leaned forward.
"If you ever mention my family again, this stops being a conversation about documents."
Vale studied him.
Thomas continued.
"I spent twenty years trying not to become the man people like you trained me to be."
Vale looked toward the door.
"You think you were trained to be violent."
"No."
Thomas shook his head.
"You trained us to obey."
That landed.
Thomas stood.
"We were good at it."
He opened the door.
Vale said, "You can't prove anything."
Thomas looked back.
"I don't have to."
Vale frowned.
Thomas said, "I only have to make the right people ask why you're afraid of an old karate gym."
Three days later, federal investigators requested the records stored beneath the library.
Two days after that, Cascade Strategic Holdings withdrew its redevelopment application.
Nobody at Harbor Point understood why.
Daniel assumed public pressure had worked.
Parents celebrated.
Ryan lifted Eli into the air.
Thomas stood near the wall.
Calvin called that night.
"They found the archive."
Thomas sat on his porch.
"And?"
"Enough."
"What does that mean?"
"It means this isn't our job anymore."
Thomas closed his eyes.
For once, that sentence felt good.
"What happens to Vale?"
"I don't know."
Thomas nodded.
There would be investigations.
Lawyers.
Hearings.
Maybe charges.
Maybe not.
Powerful people rarely received endings as clean as stories promised.
But the truth no longer belonged only to the men who had buried it.
That was enough.
Thomas thought the hardest part was over.
He was wrong.
The following Saturday, Harbor Point held another community class.
Thomas arrived expecting normal chaos.
Instead, nearly everyone was waiting.
Daniel stood in the center.
Ryan beside him.
Eli grinning.
