Cole tore it free while smoke rolled across the yard. Only six words were written across the page. "Next time we take the woman. " The fire roared high enough to turn the dawn sky orange. Cole threw open the barn doors while thick smoke rolled past his face. The frightened horses kicked against their stalls.

Clara rushed to the well without waiting for instructions. She filled one bucket, then another. Again. Again. The cold water hissed against burning timber, but the flames kept climbing.

Cole cut the first horse loose. The frightened animal burst through the doorway into the pasture. A second followed. Then a third. A burning beam crashed behind him.

Clara's breath caught. Cole! He disappeared inside the smoke. For one endless moment she saw nothing. Then he emerged carrying an old saddle across one shoulder.

He dropped it onto the ground and looked back at the collapsing roof. "We've got one horse left. " The mare screamed inside. Without hesitation, Cole covered his mouth with a wet blanket and rushed back into the fire. Clara gripped the empty bucket until her fingers hurt. Seconds felt like hours.

Finally, the mare burst through the doorway. Cole stumbled behind her coughing hard. The roof collapsed with a thunder that shook the valley. The barn was gone. Only black beams remained.

Morning light spread slowly across the ranch. Neighbors arrived after seeing the smoke. Old Mr. Harper rode in first, then two brothers from the next valley. Everyone worked together until the last flames died.

Walter Briggs appeared before noon with four deputies. He studied the burned fence, then the warning note. His face grew hard. "This wasn't meant to destroy your ranch. " Cole nodded. "It was meant to frighten her. " Walter folded the paper carefully.

"They'll make another move. " Clara stepped forward. ""Then let's stop waiting. "" Every eye turned toward her. She stood straight despite the soot covering her dress. "I spent too many years letting other people decide where I belonged. " She looked toward Cole. "I'm finished running. " Walter removed another document from his saddlebag. ""We questioned a man this morning. "" He handed the paper to Cole. ""It names the leader of the gang. "" Cole read it once. "Then again. " ""Silas Crow. "" ""A cattle broker who traveled from town to town pretending to arrange ranch contracts. "" ""Behind the business stood kidnapping, forged debts, and illegal auctions. "" Walter pointed toward the mountains. ""Crow is hiding at Broken Mesa. "" ""How many men? "" ""Eight that we know. "" Cole looked toward Clara. ""You stay here. "" She folded her arms. ""No. "" ""This is dangerous. "" ""So was standing on that auction wagon. "" He opened his mouth.

She gently interrupted. ""I won't carry a rifle. "" ""I won't stand in your way. "" ""But I will stand beside the people fighting. "" Walter smiled quietly. ""She's got frontier grit. "" Cole could not argue. By late afternoon they reached Broken Mesa. The old trading station sat between tall red cliffs. Wagons circled the camp. Armed guards watched every trail.

Walter counted the men through a spyglass. ""Eight. "" Cole looked toward the narrow canyon beside the camp. ""If we split them, we win. "" The deputies moved silently into position. Clara remained behind a large boulder with the spare horses. She watched every movement, every shadow, every rider. A single whistle echoed through the canyon. Walter's signal.

The deputies rode from one side. Cole charged from the other. The outlaws scrambled for cover. Gunfire echoed against the cliffs. Horses scattered in every direction.
