When the formal business concluded, general counsel began to close the meeting and Viven asked the directors to stay for a few more minutes. I assumed she wanted to thank me on the record and I stood there holding a document box like a man waiting for a bus. Then she stood up and walked away from the head of the table. I noticed it because everybody noticed it. She left the chair and she left the folder on it and she came down the long side of the room to the end where I was standing.

She said she wanted to say something in front of the people who had spent the last 6 weeks discussing my motives and that she wanted it in the minutes. Then she told them the whole thing. That in September she had asked me to dinner privately with no business purpose and that I had turned her down and told her why. that in December she had offered to buy my company at a premium, give me a title and fund her education, and that. I had turned that down too and walked out of her office. That in January I had voluntarily terminated 61% of my own revenue rather than let my contracts be used as a weapon against her.

She said she had spent 4 months trying to understand why. She said she had assumed at first that it was a negotiating posture because in her experience refusal was almost always price discovery. Then she had assumed it was pride and she had been wrong both times and she had figured it out somewhere between the third and fourth reading of a letter of intent she should never have written. The problem was never that I would not come into her world. The problem was that every single offer she had ever made me was an offer to admit me to it on her terms, at her level, at her discretion, like a visa.

She turned and looked at me directly, and she said that love was not a matter of somebody being allowed into somebody else's world. It was two people building a third thing that had room in it for both of them, and she had never once built anything with another person in her life, only acquired. Then she reached into the pocket of her jacket and put a ring on the table between us. Plain platinum, no stone, the least expensive thing that woman had bought in 15 years. And she told me later she had chosen it precisely because I could not have refused it on the grounds of extravagance.

11 Directors of a company worth tens of billions of dollars sat absolutely still. Meredith Langford's hand stopped halfway to her water glass. Somebody's phone buzzed against the table, and nobody reached for it. Vivien Sterling stood in front of the board that had convened that morning to remove her. Next to the man they had been told was a fortune hunter and asked me to marry her.
