For several minutes, neither spoke. Then, slowly, she began telling him things she had never shared with anyone at work. Her father had built the company with her, but after his death, she had buried herself in work because she couldn't bear returning to an empty home. Her mother had passed away years earlier. She had spent so long convincing herself that meeting people was a weakness that she had forgotten what it felt like to have someone waiting for her.
Daniel listened without judgment. Then, almost without realizing it, he told her about Lily. He showed Victoria a picture of his daughter sleeping on the couch with a coloring book beside her. He explained that Lily had been asking for a small bicycle for months, but he hadn't been able to afford one. He smiled when he spoke about her, and for the first time that night, Victoria smiled, too.
She realized that the man sitting in front of her had almost nothing compared to her wealth, yet he possessed something she had spent years searching for, a reason to come home. The following morning, Daniel arrived at work expecting everything to feel awkward. Instead, Victoria treated him exactly as she always had. She never mentioned the evening, but something had changed. A few days later, Daniel was called into her office and discovered that she had reviewed his employment records.
She learned that he had repeatedly refused overtime because he needed to pick Lily up from school. She learned about his weekend driving, his unpaid bills, and the fact that he had recently fallen behind on his rent. Daniel immediately worried that he was going to lose his job. Instead, Victoria offered him a promotion into a position he was already qualified for, but had never thought he could obtain. The salary would be enough to stabilize his family.
Daniel was stunned, but Victoria made it clear that she wasn't giving him charity. She was giving him an opportunity because she had finally recognized something the company had overlooked. He was one of the hardest-working people there. But the biggest surprise came weeks later. One rainy afternoon, Daniel arrived home to find Lily standing at the window staring outside.
A brand new bicycle was leaning against the wall near their front door. Daniel knew immediately who had sent it. There was no expensive ribbon or dramatic note, only a small card that said it was from someone who believed every child deserved something to smile about. Daniel didn't tell Lily about Victoria's loneliness or the quiet battles she fought behind her office doors. Instead, he invited Victoria to dinner one evening.
