I am, Marcus said. The one who organized all this. One of the people who organized it, Marcus said. He said it evenly without aggression, without the particular male posturing that the situation was angling for. Just steady, present, not moving.

Derek looked at him for a moment with an expression that was trying to be casual and not quite getting there. "Nice of you," Derek said. "She deserved it," Marcus said. The two sentences sat in the air with a clarity that required no elaboration. Derek turned back to Olivia.

The smile was still there, but it had gone thinner. "You sure? " "I'm sure," she said. He nodded once, looked around the yard a final time. All right. Well, you know where to reach me if things change.

Things won't change, she said. But thank you for coming. He left. The gate clicked shut behind him. The yard was silent for exactly 3 seconds.

Then Mrs. Patterson said at her full normal volume to no one in particular, "Mhm." The tension broke. Someone laughed. Someone else said something Marcus didn't catch, and there was a ripple of laughter across the yard, the kind that comes after a held breath releases, and the afternoon restarted. Olivia didn't look at Marcus for a full minute after Derek left. She stood with her back to the gate, looking at the banner, and he could see her collecting herself, the way he had come to recognize the set of the shoulders, the quiet breath, the return.

When she turned, she didn't look at anyone in particular. She looked at the gathering around her. These people, her people. This neighborhood that had shown up in folding chairs with peach cobbler and handprinted banners and stories about three phone calls that had changed the shape of someone's life. She said clearly enough for everyone to hear, "I don't know how to say thank you for this." Mrs. Patterson said, "Baby, you already did everyday for 11 years." Olivia pressed her lips together, nodded, held it together barely.

Then Ava's voice came from somewhere near the dessert table. Ms. Olivia, you should see how much peach cobbler Mrs. Patterson made. It's a lot. And just like that, the moment released. Later, late afternoon, the yard beginning to empty.

Darius doing final tallies on his phone. Marcus found himself standing next to Olivia at the fence at the edge of the Henderson property. Both of them looking at nothing in particular, holding the comfortable silence of two people who have been through something together and don't need to narrate it. Darius appeared at Marcus's side, looked at his phone, and held it up. Marcus looked at the number.
