"Are you here to play with us? " Ethan smiled back. "Yeah, something like that. " He met Sister Agnes, the woman who ran the place. When he told her why he'd come, she blinked in surprise. "You want to donate your honeymoon fund? " she asked. Ethan nodded.

"It was meant for love and new beginnings. I think this is closer to that than a beach resort. You know, most people don't come back here once their lives get busy. " Ethan gave a small, tired smile. "Guess life decided to slow me down. " By the end of the week, he'd been painting walls, fixing toys, helping the kids with homework, and laughing more than he had in months. But the thoughts faded each time a child tugged his sleeve and said "Come play, mister. " There was one moment that stayed with him.

A little girl, maybe 6 years old, handed him a crumpled drawing. It was of a man and a child holding hands under a bright yellow sun. "That's you," she said proudly. "And me. " Ethan laughed softly. "You drew us happy. " "Because we are," she said simply.

He stared at the paper for a long time after she ran off. In that childish drawing, he saw something he hadn't felt in months. A kind of quiet happiness that didn't depend on anyone else. By the end of the week the orphanage playground had new paint, new swings, and a sign at the gate that read "Love grows here. " When it was time to leave the kids crowded around him hugging his legs and waving handmade cards. "Will you come back? " one boy asked.

Ethan crouched down smiling. I will. I promise. He meant it. Driving home that evening the city lights blurred past the window.

He didn't feel empty anymore just calm. For the first time since the canceled wedding he felt like he had done something that mattered. He didn't text Layla. Didn't check her social media but a week later word reached him through a friend. She'd given birth early.

The father Mark had disappeared completely. Her family had taken her back in out of pity. Ethan said nothing. He just wished her well in silence that night. He pinned the children's drawing.

The one with the bright yellow sun to his refrigerator door. A reminder that love wasn't about ceremonies but small. Honest acts. He poured himself a cup of tea sat by the window.

And smiled faintly at the thought. Maybe real freedom wasn't about being alone. It was about learning to be kind again.
